Just a data point here, I’m QF WP and currently on the way back to Australia on QF76 at YVR In J.

I was having some trouble working out whether we had lounge access or not. So I checked in the old-fashioned way with the human and was directed to the Skyteam lounge at gate D 53 and I’m currently in there. It’s not wonderful but it beats paying $20 for a beer with the great unwashed. 😁

Cathay lounge wasn’t open due to no Cathay flight.

Qantas recently made major arrangements for Cathay in Brisbane, extending the QF BNE lounge hours well after the last Qantas flight so they can cater for CX's services.

I think it would be great if CX gave QF something in return, and changing the CX lounge hours in YVR to cater for QF would be the ideal option. QF shouldn't have to resort to making deals with rival alliances for lounge arrangements.

I'm sure $$$ was paid by Cathay to keep it open. It's not exactly charity here. QF already has a contracted lounge in YVR and likely don't want to pay for CX rates. Sad though as CX lounges in general are great.

Same in SFO. QF uses the AF lounge (same as QR) rather then the CX or BA lounges (or the AA lounge in T1).

A pleasant surprise today departing YVR, Qantas are now directing QF76 to the Cathay Lounge which is open from 6:20pm for the current flight times. This is next level compared to the usual packed and average Skyteam Lounge. Apparently it started on Mondays Flight on the 14th. Noodle bar is amazing.

Completely empty when arrived at 6:40 and even now at 8:40pm is only half full.

Edit: as a note the app still said sky team lounge but the checkin agent and boarding pass noted the Cathay lounge.

That's a big improvement. The Skyteam lounge just wasn't great when we went through there a couple of years ago.

Thank the gods. Was on QF76 on 12 April and directed to the dreaded Skyteam lounge. It was, as usual, barely ok and after a quick bite and GnT I left to find an empty gate lounge in preference.
As a JAL Sapphire I have used both the Plaza and Cathay lounges at YVR this year. Both are good but Cathay is the better choice. Noodle Bar is the go.

Unlucky, missed it by one flight! I have never bothered with the SkyTeam lounge, it is awful, especially for anyone travelling with a family - never any seats. A&W and a quiet seat in the poor mans lounge by gate D54 (provided the gate is empty) has been my goto since COVID.

Super thankful Cathay Lounge is now open for this flight - Especially when you run out of things to do in VAN and head into the airport instead.

On a side note: My folks flew out of Van on FJ on Friday - They were directed to the SkyTeam Lounge with Cathay being closed - I don't think Cathay have any scheduled flights on Friday. I'd love to know if they are allowing FJ Pax into the lounge on days it is open now they are full OW members.

Edited as got the date wrong.

Cathay has generally been fine worldwide about accepting OW Elites (unlike say, QR), unless there's a real capacity crunch. So as long as the pax are OWS or OWE (with any airline), when flying FJ code (or any OW code), they should be allowed.

But for non-elites flying FJ in business class, which is the primary subject of this thread, that's subject to FJ/CX direct agreement and wouldn't be affected by OW membership status. For now FJ's web site says the Skyteam lounge. But I guess we'll need someone to try it out...

Why would J access be subject to a FJ/CX direct agreement?

But FJ are full oneworld members now, so standard oneworld class of service access rules apply?
Yes if the passengers have oneworld status.

If they don't have status but have paid for a Business class fare, then you're only entitled to use the lounge that your airline gets you into. As FJ don't have their own lounge there, they have an agreement with CX for FJ's Business class passengers to use the CX lounge.
