VAustralia Economy seat and legroom

At 6'5" any Y seat is far from palatial (although Click MX was close at 35"), but there is a noticable difference between 31" and 32".
I cannot tell miniscule differences in pitch, and suspect most people are the same, and we are talking about average pitch not actual pitch. If your knees were imbedded in the seat in front it would not matter if they were embedded 4" or 5" (I have been in this situation many times even with my height) although you would notice if you were comfortable and all of a sudden your knees were just touching the seat in front.

So in theory at 32" average pitch some seats could be 33", some could be 32.5" pitch, some could be 32" pitch, some could be 31" and some could even be 30". The same goes for 31" average pitch as some seats could be 32", some could be 31", some seats could be 30" and some seats could even be 29".

I conducted a small experiment on Fridays flight (767 bulkhead in front) and yesterdays flight (24F in international configuration). I had my feet against my own seat for a few minutes and then slowly moved them out 0.5"-1" each time and I could not tell the difference in feel at each of the different pitches. I will conduct the experiment again, for my own benefit, with something solid in front.

JohnK, you seem to imply that single negative experiences shouldnt be posted?
Far from it I want to read people's experiences good or bad. The person who posted the review I am questioning has a habit of providing glowing reviews for anything non Qantas. Sure most people would realise that the person is exagerating but all I did was question the exceptional service that was posted and I have everyone jumping down my throat.

Anyway time for me to go as it is quite clear from the barrage that we should believe everything we read and not question it....

That's not what i said. And we'd have less fun if you went.

I'd struggle to think many (particularly on this forum) would read that post and believe that would be the universal experice.

I wasnt jumping down your throat John, just putting a (friendly:)) counter argument.

There's enough Qantas apologisits around (here and elsewhere) so it seems only fair to have some pro-VA/DJ too :p

I would be extremely surprised if you sat different people down in an airline seat with 32" pitch and then put them in the same airline seat with 31" pitch whether they could tell the difference. Yes both seat pitches would be uncomfortable but essentially the same. And knowing the seat pitch before making a comparison (most people believe what they read) is cheating.
That's easy John. It depends upon where your body length is. If you have a big butt, or are long in the upper leg area it is important. If you are the tall in the upper body and/or lower legs and short in the upper legs 31 or 32 inch does not really matter.

And this happens to every passenger on every flight? I don't think so. Glowing, false, lucky once in a lifetime experiences, reviews like this should not be posted as they can make other people very disappointed when they do not receive similar service.
You post your good and bad experiences but no one challenges you about whether your experience is appropriate for 'every passenger on every flight' and nor should they.

As we no longer fly Qantas, reviews can only be on 'anything non Qantas'.

You've put the 'exceptional service' down to 'once in a lifetime luck'. I'd say it was because the airline was trying harder with new staff eager to do well.

V and others were simply more pleasurable flights with ample knee-room. Maybe you should try VA. ;)

I'm not anti-Qantas. I've drawn attention on ski websites to 3 Qantas & Jetstar sales for flights to Japan and the US. (I hope they enjoy the trip and the sale fares). And I've highlighted problems with VA such as their (previous) late arrival time in LA and things with their ff scheme (which are being redressed). Personally I'd love to fly direct on Qantas to SFO, which is only 4 hours drive to my accom in Lake Tahoe, than fly to LA and either drive 9 hours or wait for a plane to Reno. But the incidents with Qantas, such as a re-landing after a 'thud', and the legroom issue made us look elsewhere.

I think we got exceptional service in seats with more legroom.

The leg room issue is appropriate if that effects you but the 're-landing after a 'thud'' has me a little puzzled. This could happen to any aircraft at any time subject to wind and weather issues. It has nothing to do with Qantas specifically. ;)

It was a calm day at Brisbane, at least at ground level. After take off, there was a heavy metallic sounding thud, and the pilot circled the Pacific, clockwise and then counterclockwise. and was diverted to Coolangatta. I don't think wind or weather caused the thud.

I don't think I would worry too much. If it was a major problem they would have landed back at BNE ASAP.
