Flying Qantas J this month with my wife who is vegetarian.

Wanted to ask if it’s necessary to preselect the Vegetarian (Vegan) special meal request before the flight or can she stick with the standard onboard menu (which does seem to have at least one plant based option per course looking at some menus for other flights)

She has had some bad experiences in the past with special meals on other airlines so not sure what the standard is like with Qantas

Assuming she is Vegetarian (not vegan) If long haul should be fine with the standard menu which has plant based options in all courses.

If domestic or trans-tasman there isn't always a Vegetarian main option in J, I've seen the FA go back and grab the whY Vegetarian option to have with the J bread and dessert.

if vegan safer to order special meal, as the veggie option often has dairy.

great, thankyou. It is a flight to Singapore and she is vegetarian (not vegan)

on some other airlines, Vegetaria/Vegan are given the same special meal which means she has ended up with fruit for dessert and not been happy!

Just to add. There is no option that is just dairy/lactose free. I have to order the Gluten fee meal as that is also dairy free. The meals vary enormously in J. . Very good SYD to JNB and totally inedible on the return with nothing else on the tray except that meal plus a few green leaves.

The current vegetarian option on the menu to Singapore is:
Starter - Carrot and thyme soup with rocket and sunflower seed pesto
Main - Roasted cauliflower with pearl couscous, zucchini, preserved lemon, almond and tahini dressing

Definitely there’ll be some vegetarian option on the J menu.

This is what I got flying PE and J to/from SIN a 3 weeks back.

First menu is J - a bit lighter because it was the 2355 departure. However, the am departure from SYD/MEL/BNE will feature vego options.

Is it possible to pre-select vego meal in J TT ? Reason I ask, I have not done TT J since CoVID and I’m able to pre-select a vego meal in domestic J.

I always ask for extra servings of sourdough bread and Pepe-saya. To keep me happy 😀

Possibly, but if you don't you can't be sure there will be a J veggie option. Last 2 trans Tasman J had chicken or beef options only.

The vegetarian guy behind me who did not pre-order ended up with the whY veggie pasta pl7s the J salad and dessert.

I did QF LHR to SYD earlier this year. I can't remember but I think you have to order a vegan meal if you want vegetarian. I have a fish allergy and so that was my only option but it was pretty ordinary and yes I got a fruit platter for dessert which they were happy to swap out

On QF1 to SIN there are definitely plant based options on the regular menu that do not need to be ordered ahead of time. Vegan is different (and usually much blander).

I've noticed multiple airlines have combined special meals, so it's now vegan not vegetarian and GF is now also catering for other allergens.

Can never make everyone happy, but most of my vego friends now only pre-order in longhaul whY as J tends to have 2 veggie options anyway; whilst vegan misses out on cake and muffins etc.

YMMV
