Velocity Platinum to Europe - SQ or EY

Lately Finnair has been my preferred airline into Europe via HKG, using Cathay from Sydney to connect.
However after a recent absolutly flawless trip with Virgin Australia, SYD/LAX in "The Business" and being able to use Etihad lounges in SYD and LAX, I am almost a convert to Virgin, after many years loyalty to QF.
I am unsure if Virgin Atlantic, will after the US take over by Alaskan, maintain the Virgin Atlantic HKG/LHR route or not, but in 2018, I am seriously considering using VA to HKG and connecting with their Virgin Atlantic partner if it will still operate that route.
What are the pros and cons of this, if in fact it will still be possible in 2018 to fly Virgin brand all the way ?

Don't worry, Virgin Atlantic is not going anywhere.

Alaska took over Virgin America, not Virgin Atlantic. Virgin America was a small US domestic airline (maybe other routes in North America, not sure). This merger will have no effect on Virgin Atlantic at all.
