Velocity points flight on Etihad

Currently on the return leg of the Melbourne to Dublin trip. Economy Class, no Virgin or Etihad status after four years of almost no flying.

Experience with online check-in and seat selection and other extras were again deeply unsatisfactory. Basically no extras were available to us, and it looked like I had to pay to choose seats right up to physical check-in. Each time I tried to choose seats, either outside or within the check-in process, I was presented with charges. However, I just exited without paying them, and ended up being allocated those seats anyway. But it was an unnecessarily stressful experience.

Although this was perhaps partly contributed to by the aircraft, the experience from the outward leg suggests it's an issue with Virgin rewards. Expect a very basic flying experience.

The planes were very tired 777-300s. Dublin-Abu Dhabi, the plane had no USB power and only 110v sockets. Video screens are quite poor resolution.
Abu Dhabi -Melbourne there are USB sockets (and 110v sockets again!), but the same old video screens, and my touch screen's touch sensitivity is about a centimetre out - this makes for an extremely frustrating use of it.

These planes don't have a lot of the extras that Etihad advertise.

The one positive I can say about the flights was the 30kg baggage allowance thst inexplicably came with the Virgin reward seats. We've used it all... Also, my questions to Etihad's Twitter account were answered promptly (about the types of seats available), even if the answers were not to my liking.

My partner wants to try Singapore Airlines next time, even though they are less direct to Dublin. She entertained herself for a while reading terrible reviews of Etihad, I think on Trustpilot.

Do you have any status with VA and were you flying Y or J?

We flew Etihad 2019 and was disappointed the Abu Dhabi>Edinburgh return sector was in the older planes. My problem with SQ is the J side sleep seats they are committed to - the side sleep seats are terrible.

Thanks for your post.

Etihad’s 777’s are horrible in any class.
They are one of my favourite airlines and as VA Plats I’ve always felt they have looked after us really well but we avoid the 777’s if possible.
Hopefully they are on their way out soon enough

I was thinking the same. Actually I find other aspects of SQ lacklustre too. QR would still provide a one stop option to DUB.

Sorry, Economy. And no status (I have barely flown for four years). I'll edit the post to say that.

The Y experience is much nicer if you can get a 787 to/from Australia to Abu Dhabi.

Doesn't matter is you have no status or the highest status the is no difference in the hard product once on board , there's no special "economy", "premium economy", "business class" or "first class" which differs for those with status ;)

I didn't suggest there was. I'm not sure what point you are trying to make.

I am flying MEL-AUH on Etihad for the first time this week. Flying in Y, return is in J.

I have VA Gold and the load is looking light - seat map is pretty empty at the moment. All seats are paid at the moment. Am I likely going to be able to select free seats once OLCI opens?

I couldn't extract any guidance from folks on this website about Etihad's "Neighbour Free" seats, and Etihad never offered them to me. But, I was travelling using Velocity points, so I don't know how it would work with a ticket paid for with money. Even the online check-in didn't really work properly for me...

My flights are also VFF award flights.

Haven’t received anything about neighbor free seats.

We’re 3 pax traveling, one of which is 3yo. The seat map looks really open right now, I’m hoping the load is light so we can spread over 2 rows. OLCI opens up 2 and a half days. Will see what happens when it's opened up.

I presume Etihad is trying to charge you for choosing seats now rather than at check-in?

Checking in for our Melbourne - Abu Dhabi - Dublin flights, I couldn't online-checkin at all to begin with. Then long after it had opened, and just a few hours before the flight, it finally let me.

Checking in for the Dublin - Abu Dhabi - Melbourne fligjts, it would let me checkin online from when it opened, but kept trying to charge me for seat selection.

It was a very frustrating experience. Unable to even checkin properly, I gave up on any prospect of paying for neighbour-free seats or paying for Priority Access (which I wanted for the return legs, as we had a tight connection on arrival in Melbourne).
