Thought people might be interested in this (Mods, if it's been mentioned previously I'm happy for it to be deleted)...

Seeing as there's now a recycling scheme for some types of containers in QLD, I decided to drop some off to the local collection point which I found out was run by Envirobank - www.envirobank.com.au

After signing up I found that you can trade 'crunch points' that they offer for VFF points. 3 bags of cans/bottles (41pcs in total) yielded 615 'crunch points' which were then redeemed for 205 VVF points (so 5pts per container). Payment from Envirobank should come through within 24-48hrs.

Okay, it may not be a lot compared to flights but for a quick easy addition (and the points redemption happened almost instantly) it's something for not much effort and for bottles / cans that might get thrown in the council recycle bin.

Choose money or Velocity points?

In your case you would have received $4.10 but instead received 205 Velocity points?

Poor conversion if that's the case.

What are you burning Velocity on to get more than 2c pp value?

Business Class?
SQ KrisFlyer?
Delta?

I transferred 27000 Velocity to Krisflyer and then used those 20000 Krisflyer points to book a DPS to BKK Business flight, of course via Changi with SQ Business lounge access. I think I was lucky to redeem at some business saver promo? Anyways - 27000 Velocity at the $1335 price showing for the flights = .049c per Velocity point.

That's a good redemption but would you spend that much on that flight in the first place?

That's always the 100k point question :)

The best redemption are for premium cabins, but unless you'd pay cash for those seats, you can't really say you 'saved' that amount of money, or got that $$ value directly for your points.

But many do and that distorts the expectations of many people.

I've heard a rumour that economy class still makes it to BKK so that is worth $700 to me. The airline can value business class at $20,000 but I wouldn't pay that amount so I use $700 as the valuation on any points used.

Like to say thanks to the OP - I joined scheme last night and took few minutes to join - had already checked locations and one few minutes drive away. Dropped off recycling today so will wait and see. Didnt autolink velocity as might get coles voucher instead. This is my second recycling since started. Got cash first time and put coins in my money tin - so its no issues either way.

Looks like the nearest depot for me is well over 2hrs drive-guess it is still a bit city centric

I like this approach but it makes me wonder - should I steer away from my supermarket points to Aldi et al and use the $ saved towards paid flights. This has become a serious consideration lately...

That would depend on how many points you can generate each year. There are now 3 of us travelling and it makes it difficult to redeem anything meaningful.

I know I'm dragging up an old thread, but in case anyone is interested, there is currently a 15% bonus on Crunch Transfers (I've been holding out hoping for a bonus since they started)
As a data point, the points and the bonus transferred instantly into my Velocity account today after confirmation from Envirobank and there's no minimum redemption points at all.

15% bonus points until 31 July:
