Hi Guys,

We are supposed to be flying next Tuesday BNE-AUH and AUH-JFK, we are in J to AUH and F to JFK and the 4 kids are in Y (a month long trip). I confirmed with Velocity at the time of booking, they checked with Etihad and they said Unattended minor was not required as we were on the same flight.

Yesterday I was speaking to Etihad to see if we could get 2 cars and each take 2 kids, he said only one in each car and said the supervisor could make an exception and handed me over. She then asks the ages of the kids and says that we will not be allowed to board because the 2 youngest (9 & 10) have to be unattended minors.

I rang Velocity and after a few hours they said yes, they had to be UM's and they would take care of it. I get a call back today and she says yes, they have to be UM's and they are trying to get the bookings modified, they will let me know in 48-72 hours (not including the weekend so it could be Monday night). I asked to speak to someone higher up and she put me through to the Level 2 handling it. She tells me she only just found out about it and put it through. Apparently the first one just double checked it was necessary and didn't pass it on until she started tonight. I said whats the problem, just rebook the new tickets and cancel the old ones. She says, can't do because the flight is full and they need to cancel them and then rebook and they probably won't get the seats. I asked for a manager and she said they just have to go through the standard channels, nothing can be rushed.

By now, I am just furious and ask her for the fall back position, what will they do if Etihad won't let them change it, will they reroute or what? She said they will then request the younger 2 be removed from the booking and failing that, just cancel the booking. I asked her what flight would they change them to and she says, that is your problem, we will just give you your points back.

Does anyone know anything I can do to get this resolved quicker?

Thanks

You could put the older 2 in J/F and parents go with the younger ones in Y
Seriously, hope you get it sorted. It sounds a great trip you have planned

According to Etihad, the UM has to been specified at the time of booking. If not, because it is with Velocity, it needs to be cancelled and rebooked. Velocity are asking to modify the booking. Essentially, it is a tick box, there is only about $50 in taxes, no charge for the UM. However, any waitlist will get the booking if they cancel it.

They can't swap one of us with the kids because they would have to cancel and rebook, hence the same.

There UM terms and conditions don't mention that... nor is there 'check here for UM' in the online booking engine.

I would submit the form and see if that works. At the same time call them back again (try calling the Australian offices directly) and hastle them to solve the problem. Quote the UM terms if needed.

I feel with you, but then ask why on earth must you burn the velocity points on economy redemptions? Just cancel the redemptions and book them as a paid booking (they'll still earn points/SC that you can pool into your account). Make the paid booking with either a travel agent or Etihad direct.

You'll have far less headaches to deal with.

Cost of one-way might be an issue. Moindardt said flight was full, so may not be able to buy revenue Y at sensible price even after returning the 4 seats

Not true. Sold out as redemptions but not as paid seats.

Easily found seats on EY485/EY171 for 22/23 Dec, the one way BNE-AUH-LAX child fare only costs 1463.03AUD per person. It will net the OP 90SC and ~7900 Velocity points.

Good find (and a good idea to explore the paid seat option) but doesn't he need JFK not LAX.

Edit: I did find availability for 4 on EY485 and EY101 for 23/12/15 at $1942 over 12, $1436 under 12. Presume the J/F award seats could still carry through.

Its still over $6k in cash as opposed to points though
