Velocity upgrade to Amex purchased ticket

I'm wanting to purchase a Virgin flexi ticket SYD to LAX return. Im think of using Amex travel to purchase the ticket to utilise the $200 credit available to platinum members. Are there any issues with getting Virgin to upgrade a AMEX travel purchased ticket???
