Hi,

My son is looking to fly with Vietnam airlines from Melbourne to Paris in June. He does not know his exact dates yet as he is waiting for his university to release their exam timetable, so he is looking to book an economy flex (S) fare now and make changes (if needed) once he knows his exam timetable.

Can someone please explain to me, based on the below rules, what charges he would have if he changed in 2 months time. Am I correct in saying it would be $50
plus fare difference. Thanks

He could actually take the economy classic as well… same $50 charge to change. The advantage of economy classic would be the price, plus I think still eligible for upgrading… which can be quite cheap.

A friend just came back on VN premium economy… they walked past their seat because they thought it was business class!

Thanks, what does "before ticketed flight date" mean.

So I suppose the risk he takes is the fare difference is large in 2 or 3 months time, but if would be up for that price anyhow, if he waited and booked in 2 or 3 months time.

The cost between economy and premium economy is not much at. If it was me, I know which one I'd be taking.

If you are booked on 5 June, you can make changes before 5 June for $50. On or after the ticketed date (5 june itself, or a no show) you pay the higher price if applicable.

Thanks again for your reply.

So using your example, if he is flying on 5 June, as long as he makes the change by 4 June, it's not going to matter whether he is flex or classic, it will only cost him $50 plus fare difference.

Exactly, as far as i can see.

The only difference being that if he pays for flex now, the fare difference will be less.

But then again I’m expecting fares to come down anyway by then, so there could be downward rather than upward pressure.

Given you have to change to an equal or higher fare only… paying the lower fare now might offer some limited protection if fares comes down.

Thank you, you have been extremely helpful. Now he knows all the facts, he can make his own mind up as to what he'll do.

First time overseas on his own, on a student budget, he's looking to save every penny. The stopover on the way back has whiskers on it.
