Vinomofo Wine Deals

Is it just me or has Vinomofo become like "the bold and the beautiful " where you can tune in 3 times a year and its the same old stuff on offer. Ridge Shiraz, Brook Sauvignon Blanc and Taylor Pinot Noir

Disagree. Sure, some stuff hangs around for a couple of months. But there always seems to be a new offering every week or two - some of which is only offered once or twice: blink and you miss them amongst the repeat offers. But I think a lot of the repeats recently have been very good wines: Thomas Hardy Cab, V&A Lane, Wynns Black Label, Rosemount Balmoral etc. You struggle to get this sort of quality wine and these discounts anywhere else IMHO.

Point taken but I did post my last remark after buying 3 of the 4 wines you mentioned, so maybe I am a more frequent buyer than yourself so it seems more repetitive to me. Its just my personal observation. btw the wynns black label was $108 for 6 delivered from winemarket so that may explain why VM can't unload at $22.50 p.b ($4.50 p.b more) and why I haven't purchased all 4 wines you mentioned

Vinomofo are a probably just another ( albeit funky) mainstream marketer now .
They built up a large customer base by selling lots of cool stuff that they sourced in small lots and sold for wafer thin margins….. couldn't continue.
I note that the majority of the offerings are now quite young whereas they had some great aged offers in the past.
They are probably selling twenty times the volume they were a year ago and the true bargains must thin out.
I will keep my eyes open as I'm sure there will still be occasional great deals.

I have just typed in a few paragraphs only to have them disappear on me. very miffed. I will make this considerably briefer. having the 2012 glenlofty shiraz viognier. I really like it, and am without food as I had to have my bbq t bone at 5.30. fruit forward without being fruity, nice dark plum with crimson tinges. a lot riding on this one, since the older 2011 brother was a beaut. the older sister, the 2011 chardonnay I find extremely rough. so , with heightened excitement, I find the 2012 SV extremely good. lovely hints of Victorian pepper, nicely balanced, medium in body, you cant see your fingers thru it - another good thing based on the varietal of course, in fact I recently read that from a winemaker that 'if he can see his fingers thru his wine, he has made a bad one". I asked about this one being funky to a VM poster. It isn't unlike the Chalmers 2013 Arturo. Now that is funky, but nice. This one would go even better with a steak. some VM'ers talk about their wine improving with air - this one is very good to start with. Time is running out so I highly recommend this one and await further comments. I think it is a very well made wine .

My Glenlofty Shiraz-Viognier just arrived and I we had a bottle over the last two evenings. I was a little nervous about the purchase because I think viognier in the shiraz can be too perfumed and sometimes doesn't blend well. This one really drinks well from the start and is maybe a bit better the second night. Beefarmer spot on with notes - white pepper, good (sweet?) fruit and well balanced. Very easy daily drinking at the price - I'm not sure about the ageing/drinking window, but in any case it probably won't hang around for too long.

Well there's hardly an unlimited stock of great bargains out there, as you build up your volume your ability to supply the great bargain naturally diminishes.

That's just life

Possibly you buy more than me, but I've bought about 300 bottles from VM this year doing a quick scan through CellarTracker. VM are shifting a million cases a year now or thereabouts, according to their PR. They are mass market now, unlike WM etc. For most people looking for quality, a couple of bucks a bottle is irrelevant. Snap it up at a good discount rather than hope someone else might offer it for $2 cheaper.

Surely nearly every single wine that VM sells, with the exception of some older, cellared products that they procure, will last 8 years from vintage. Surely for most of us this provides a very adequate drinking window, unless you drink 2 bottles a week and have a thousand at home...looks like I have to start drinking more then ! In my days a few years ago before my brother put me onto VM, I was buying thru grays and winemarket. When I found a beaut, at a fantastic price, I would buy a few cases. I don't need to do that anymore with a simple one case purchase nowadays. Of course, Twins gsm deserved a bigger outlay. The quality on offer thru grays has fallen lower than a diplomats credentials infront of a federal committee. That's when VM have come to the fore. have no fear, the quality will always be there.

All good perspectives. I really just wanted to point out that I was a regular VM buyer since the day they started but find it hard to pull the trigger these days and buy (its been months). I'm still a fan of VM and I think part of the reason I purchase less from them is I tend to pass on dozen lots as I want to have variety in my cellar and not too many volume wise. I very rarely sent any back but over the past year I have sent a lot back which may be because VM are giving less clues these days. I wonder if as VM grow they are under more pressure from suppliers to take the whole shed full and they can't be as selective as in earlier days.

Sorry, I'm getting confused as to what your actual beef is with them? First you seem to be implying they only offer a few wines (aka you can tune in three times a year). You also seem to be saying now that you don't like dozen lots, and want more variety packs due to limited space. And you're also sending things back because you don't like them - is that because they're low quality wines? I really understand the problem.

FWIW, based on what I can recall, these threads and my purchases, just this year they've offered:
Seppelt (Jaluka, Mt Ida, Chalambar)
Wynns (Black Shiraz, Cab Sauv, V&A Lane Cab Shiraz, V&A Lane Shiraz)
Lindemans (St George, Pyrus, Limestone Ridge)
Rosemount (Balmoral, GSM)
Wolf Blass (Grey Label Shiraz, Cab Shiraz)
Devil's Lair Cab Sauv
Parous Shiraz
Shermeldine Merindoc
Top of the Tree
Adelaide Winemakers Quorum
Hungerford Hill
Forest Hill Block 9
Hardy's Thomas Hardy Cab Sauv
de Bortoli (Pinot, Bianco)
Stefani Chardonnary
Hermera
Two Hands (various)
Lou Miranda
Capel Vale
Amelia Park
3 Oceans
Phi Lusatia (Chardy and Pinot)
at least half a dozen more Reislings and Chardonnays, one desert wine, a half dozen imports, Hand Crafted by Hardy, Duck Sauce, Art of War, Krug, Yalumba Scribbler, various Prosecos and sparklings I haven't bothered to check, the Orgy, Old Money and so on. Pretty much all available in 6 packs, some are 2010. There's even a 2005 vintage sparkling there right now.

There's enough there to do at least one new (and think probably two new) per week - if that would make you happier. And if you want aged wine at a decent price, I think you need to go to Dan Murphys - cellars are not really in that business - you can see the paucity of stuff by signing up with Langtons - it gets snapped up very quickly and doesn't sell at a discount. I've managed to get aged Clarendon Hills and Killakanoon in the past few months, but you're pretty much paying full price - not VM's model.

I have absolutely no beef with them at all, as I said I am a fan of VM. I was simply expressing that I am more and more going to their site and looking through all offers and at the end finding nothing to purchase and I think it is because I have mostly already purchased or already decided not to purchase the wines offered at some stage (sometimes many months earlier). Over the years you would see a wine come and go only a couple of times over a short period, it now seems the same wine can appear over many months and many many times which results in less new wines on offer (less variety). It seems to me to be repetitive offers most of the time and less variety than earlier years and I was wondering if I was the only one who felt that way. I was really just wanting the forum users opinions to see if anybody else has noticed this trend or been unable to find new and interesting options. i am not asking anybody to takes sides or defend anything or cement themselves to an opinion but simply expressing an opinion as I thought that was the main function of a forum. I am genuinely interested in the opinions of the forum members and really appreciate the feedback already received. I have realised while expressing this opinion that there are many differing situations and consumption rates of wine and probably the single most obstacle for me purchasing is that many wines i am interested in are in dozens and thats entirely a personal parameter.

Ah - OK - I see.

Checking this year, there's definitely been many that have been there for months at a time. But there's also been plenty that have only been offered once or twice. E.g. the 3 Oceans Chardonnay was only offered twice - I remember that one because I missed out. From memory Tweftree was another that only appeared a couple of times. I guess as VM has gotten bigger, and actually become a mass market channel, they need to source large(r) parcels. If they only had small stuff, they'd be perpetually running out.

And let us know your top 3 from the VM puchases you listed?

I didn't purchase all of those - they were a combination of what I can remember, what's in this thread and what I did purchase.

Top 3 purchases IMHO are:
- Poonawatta 1880 Shiraz 2009 (one I forgot to list above)
- Lindemans Pyrus 2012 (classic left bank Bordeaux style)
- Hewitson Mad Hatter 2012 (also left off the list - not the greatest wine, but dead easy drinking shiraz)

Runners up in the value stakes
- Seppelt Jaluka 2013 - great drinking Chardonnay for the price
- Anvers The Warrior 2010 - awesome for $16/bottle

I also snapped up a bundle of the Wynns, Rosemount and Lindemans offerings (edit and Wolf Blass too). They're all stalwarts of the industry and should keep well.

Nohing much catching our eye at the moment either. Already picked up the Wynns black cab sav and the V&A Lane cab Shiraz.

I received a box of Bayliss Road Black Label GSM 2014 the other day and sampled some.

I have to say I was not very impressed. The finish tasted like alcohol - not a very nice after taste, especially for a RRP of $28. Not much going on, pretty boring wine really. Even after leaving it for a few hours to open up in the decanter - no change.

I am comparing this to the Maverick Twins GSM which was SMASHING! :)

Has anyone else tried this one? Is it just me? Are my taste buds off?

Also, anyone know the difference between the above wine and Vinrock McLaren Vale G.S.M. 2014? Both are Vinrock.

Thanks.

I have never sent a box back but with the current situation higher sales volume and arguably lower quality, I would not hesitate to do so.
If nobody complains/returns.. they may assume they can sell ice to us eskimo's……..

The smaller wineries and different varietals have enticed me in the past. For instance, Soul Growers, Sorby Adams, Gapsted, Delatite, Schild and Cherubino; and Fiano and Saperavi grape varieties. The big name brands don't interest me so much because they're easy to obtain elsewhere. VM's own labels don't interest me at all. In that regard I'd always opt for the Kemenys Hidden Labels. I can work out what I'm getting and can just buy a bottle or two if I want.

In other words, there's been little to tempt me of late.
