Vinomofo Wine Deals

Anyone else finding VinoMofo a bit boring recently, lots of offers of stuff that's not moving, nothing much new or all that desirable?
Of 80+ wines today, the two reds I saw marked as "Brand New" were not, they've been offered before and they hadn't even bothered to change the URLs from last time offered.

The "brand new" thing happens a lot. As for the sale, t it seems I managed to get the last (or second last) case of Kalgan Ironrock chardy that I missed out on last time, so at least I'm happy :)

As for "boring" - didn't we have the same theme 6 months ago in this thread? I guess it depends on what people are looking for - what's boring for one person isn't for someone else, so we're all going to be "bored" at some point, and not at others. I guess there's also the post-Christmas/NY lulls and what-have-you. If people are like me, we stock up on quaffers etc. for parties in Nov/Dec and have stuff left over to run down in Jan/Feb before rushing out again.

I guess I'm still reasoably happy that they're putting up quality stuff (aka the 95+ point stuff) - bought the Capel Vale Scholar, Oakridge, Ironrock...

Yes - the offerings aren't attracting me much. There seems to be more of 'their' wines (made or sourced for the company) and some unknown wineries that are putting high RRP on just to discount as a standard selling mechanism. Very few interesting deals from wineries clearing out stocks. Still, as discussed a few times recently, Vino is now large and its stock-sourcing model is changing accordingly. Trouble is, I am less and less inclined to bother reading the emails much and have a look when there's free freight and I need a dozen quaffers (or the fine folk from this thread start raving about something). I haven't even bought the Churchview offerings, despite trusting the exemplary judgement of one Beefarmer!

Totally lost it's gloss IMHO - I can count on one hand 2015 purchases - the dude who calls me has been told don't bother unless it' a stunner - seldom do I hear from him now.

I went through 3 or 4 brokers in quick succession and now dont hear from anyone. I made a couple of purchases recently but not for me.

The really good times were never going to last , but there has been a smattering of interesting stuff released already among the chaff that the multitudes suck up.
It's even more a quick and the dead site now , the occasional great deals just evaporate , even if you are "in" and get advance notice.

Haven't seen fantastic deals but still seeing good deals - I mean where else am I going to get $25 and upwards wine ( I know it is only recommended) for less than $10. It is still a reasonable site for people like myself who can only afford the cheaper wines. If you are buying better quality it has lost its lustre. My best deals are the Reislings as I cannot buy them cheaper ( unless the quality is a lot less) anywhere else. A friend I put onto Patrick Riesling recently purchased 3 cases. For $7.90 a bottle you would be hard pressed to find a better deal.

I disagree. By all means VM doesn't have a monopoly on good deals, but there's still plenty of great buying at $20, $30 and even more at VM. Parous 2010, Star Lane Shiraz, Willoughby Park Kalgan Ironrock Shiraz, Hewitson Mad Hatter were all great offerings from 2015 IMHO. Giant Squick Ink is in the "maybe" basket.

It's a signal to noise problem.

There are still a few good deals hiding, but lots of noise clouding the issue. This was always going to be the case with the growth of VM. Most wine in Australia is still sold through other channels. From a market perspective VM are still relatively small.

Yes - VM's cost to sell a barrique is much lower than a bricks and mortar store, and even plenty of other online channels, but the discounts the wineries must accept turns off many, as they can still ship their inventory via other channels at a slower pace and at a higher strike price to the consumer, and to them. Speed of sale, and offloading lower quality inventory is attractive, but maintaining brand premium and pricing is also important.

I would be interested to know how many of the 400K mof_s have actually purchased.

Star Lane.....think I actually have a sixer of that somewhere! Just reminded me AC :) What's it like?

This I agree with - there's a lot of "other stuff" in VM's offerings - only 20% of what's up there will appeal to any one person - but which 20% probably varies depending on who the buyer is. With their growth, they probably have to cater to a far wider market now.

And the non-stop generation of FOMO by VM doesn't help their cause. Buying becomes like a drug - but then you feel let down if there's nothing compelling to buy for a week. But look at everyone else - DM, Cracka, WM, CM, BWS - how often do they have something compelling to buy? Far, far, less often IMHO. The only other place that I buy nearly as much from as VM is Langtons, but they mostly play in a different market.

I agree with the sentiment of the thread. Wines sub $10 are typically very good value. I bought some of the Penley 2012 Steyning....no way this is a +$100 wine as stated by VM...key range for me is $8 to $20...after being let down by that purchase I will not try again...safer to buy at the $50 range through Langtons...they have some great buys on aged wines...

Yea its fairly repetitive. I have purchased only 12 bottles this year from VM. The Drumborg Pinot x 6 and the Helen & Joey Cab/Mer x 6. I have a fair cellar so can be choosy with what I buy. I have noticed delivery very slow over the last 6 months which increases the risk of heat damage. I would buy more if there was more 6 Packs on offer. If I had the choice of say 12@ $10 or the same wine with an option of 6@$11. I would be happy to pay an extra buck a bottle and just get 6.

A whole extra $1/bottle? for VM to buy new 6-pack boxes and repack things out of what the vineyard supplies? Can't imagine there's much profit in doing that.

Even with some of the more expensive 6-packers (the Brokenwood Semillon and Pertargina Rifle and Hunt) which VM sold for $15 & $16/bottle respectively, you had to buy 12 (and got 2 x 6 packs). I suspect there's very little margin in the lower priced wines - it's purely a volume business. >

$20 and you're starting to get individual six-packs.

I curious to know where you go for good $11/bottle six packs? Because I'd be keen to buy from there to...

The majority of Dozens I have from VM came as 2 x 6 packs banded together so more labour intensive. The $10/$11 was just a hypothetical so lets say $14 /$15 the same point stands.. The Frank Potts at the moment for $14 by the doz come in 2 x 6 packs (and its cork btw and poor quality cork despite their description of Screwcap). I'd pay $15 each for a 6 pack and VM make more profit on the freight as well. Win,Win. Simply wanted to state that I would purchase more if available in 6 packs. Historically they offered more in 6 packs until recently. I would say that 85 % of my purchases from VM came in 6 pack format and multiples thereof.
