Vinomofo Wine Deals

Hi Redbigot I was told the 2016 reds need time as did the 2013 reds. Example 1. The 2016 Clarrys gsm was tight or closed compared to the 2015 and 2017 as was their Greenock shiraz. I am sitting it out till the 2017's come out. Cheers Rug

That's a verrrry broad generalisation. I'm sure there are plenty of examples that support that proposition, but I can probably come up with just as many that contradict it. Every vintage there are reds made to drink soonish and those made to cellar, the latter in a minority these days. Yes, there are often particular vintage characteristics relating to development profile (sometimes only valid within a particular region), but having bought and cellared red wines for nearly 50 years now, I'm reasonably confident in assessing how a young wine will develop over say 10 years.

If a wine is out of balance and hard-edged (rather than just big and maybe firmly tannic/oaky) it seldom comes into balance down the track.

I would much prefer the Kalleske Greenock Shiraz 2016 compared to the Lear 2016, happy to pay the price difference. Or even the $18 Allegiance Artisan Barossa Shiraz, now that is one seriously delicious 2016 Shiraz at a good price.

Hi redbigot; I agree totally about balance in a wine; a wine is not much without it. Your knowledge is appreciated and well earned. There are many top end wines made to cellar and other wines made in the drink now style as you correctly state. My statement was based on conversation with some wineries which maybe falls in your vintage characteristics. There are also wine reviewers who write about a wine needing time (up to a decade). In the end The Catkin 2012 was great and The Lear 2014 was pretty good but none of the Lears are worth the rrp. Thanks and cheers Rug

I haven't had a call for ages. Maybe I should ring up and say I am lonley :p

Confirmation of some recent arrivals - I ordered these last week but they've both sold out already; there's always a chance we'll see them again at VM in the future.

Black Market Margaret River shiraz 2014 $25 -> $12.50
Vinomofo - Black Market Shiraz 2014 - Red Wine
Halliday 94, 5-star winery, "x-factor"
McHenry Honen Rocky Road
Tried this one last night and wish I'd bought more - an excellent wine for the price. Has plenty of cellaring potential but already drinking well. Hoping it's offered again!

Black Market Margaret River Cabernet Merlot 2014 $40 -> $11.90
Vinomofo - Black Market Cabernet Merlot 2014 - Red Wine
Tony Keys 96, Sam Kim 94, Wine Showcase 94, Wine Matrix 93, Rob Geddes 92
Allegiance The Artisan
Very good, I still haven't had a disappointing Allegiance red. Not one for long term cellaring but lovely now.

Is the loss of vim status liked to how much is purchased ?

I would assume so. Presumably those early adopters who have stopped buying would lose their status? Just like an airline.

I suspect it is something like a rolling $1K spend over some time period?

You sure this is the Glenlofty? Got a sneaky suspicion that it may be the Mavericks. I could be wrong but the blurb talks about changes in label. My last delivery of Mavericks Shiraz 2014 came in an unfamiliar label from previous vintages.

Good point! This is an earlier listing for the Glenlofty 2014 I bought at VM - not the same as the current wine listed:
Vinomofo - Black Market Shiraz 2014 - Red Wine

Edit: on 2nd thoughts, I'm pretty sure it IS the Glenlofty, just a new VM listing for it. Matches up with everything, particularly 93% Shiraz, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Viognier.

Maverick is Eden/Barossa Valley aren’t they? This is Pyrenees

Gah! Good point AC, my apologies. Rookie error on my behalf. In my haste I'd got my labels mixed up. It was the Glenlofty that came with a different design.

I have actually ordered this one before and remember being a little underwhelmed after previously being very happy with my other Glenlofty purchases.

The closest match I can find is
Jim Brand Silent Partner Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon
Yep, agreed. Halliday points match & it's matching on a couple of the wine show results I looked up.

Another case of VM advertising an inflated RRP though, Jim Brands website clearly still selling it at $36/btl, or $31/btl in a 6pk with their advertised discount applied.
