2016 Cornerstone Wilyabrup Cabernet Sauvignon - Juniper Estate

Hand picked and sorted; aged in French oak for up to 20 months; best barrels selected for final blend. Smashing wine. This cabernet has come from the best address in town, but it doesn't make a thing about it. It's elegant, it's long and precisely sculpted, and its varietal expression is one of extreme purity. From the original 1973 plantings, this has aromas of violet, cassis and blueberry with roasting herbs and bracken also in the mix. The palate has impressive energy and focus – blueberry and blackcurrant flavours, dark plum and chocolate. One of two cabernets released under the new brand and I particularly love this stylish wine. The difference between this and the Karridale cabernet is most noticeable with the Wilyabrup providing a wine with more generous body and weight through the palate. But in both cases the wines present as more medium bodied with an effortless, generous but silky-smooth mouth feel. This was the year of tannin in WA, yet these have been expertly managed to sit snuggly within the palate. Bright and alive with the structure and fruit intensity to handle extended cellaring. A herbal, floral edge on the nose, with bay-leaf and a brambly redcurrant fruit character. There is a prettiness and lift to the bouquet. The flavours are mid to heavy-weight, with a briary blackcurrant drive, with some dark cherry and brambly elements coming through as well. The tannins are firm, fine-grained and give this stylish, sophisticated wine a long and structured finish. Drink: 2021–2031 The Real Review

A well-built wine with a readiness to age seeping through its veins, this Juniper Cornerstone is an excellent layered Cabernet full of interest. The vines were planted 1973 and the site is unirrigated and sustainably farmed. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Merlot (86.5/4.5/4.5/4.5), it saw 16-21 days on skins and spent 18 months French oak (50% new). Deep and concentrated, it is highlighted by blackcurrants and black fruits. Engaging savoury characters of char and licorice hitch a ride with dried sage and bay leaf coming in late. A drying wine with dusty tannins, a secondary feature of exotic spice unfurls and perseveres through to a long close. It's one of those wines you can cellar and forget. Just brilliant! Deep crimson. Developed blackcurrant, tobacco leaf aromas with dark chocolate notes. Velvety textured wine with plentiful blackcurrant, tobacco flavours, some earthy notes, fine grainy tannins and mocha oak notes. Finishes grainy/cedar firm. Very good complexity, generosity and finesse. 86.5% cabernet sauvignon, 4.5% malbec, 4.5% merlot, 4.5% cabernet franc. From 2022-2034 Margaret River Regional Journal 2022
