Big secret inside Virgin Australia’s new Boeing 737 Max 8
The brand new Boeing 737 Max 8 has overhead stowage bins large enough to accommodate 176 carry on bags or one for every passenger. In comparison older 737-800s comfortably fit just 118.

Virgin Australia took delivery of its new aircraft in Seattle Wednesday morning but would not allow photographs of the interior.

General manager of aviation, Peter O’Donohue said they did not want to spruik the extra space bins so as not to encourage passengers to bring more carry-on on board.

Good luck with that

He confirmed the carry-on limit for passengers would remain at 7kg even with more overhead space.

“We don’t want to publicise that because you don’t want people to think ‘oh bigger bins we’ll take more on’,” said Mr O’Donohue.

“The bags can now go sideways whereas before they had to go flat. It is a selling point but you’re hoping they don’t decide to carry more on.”
That is a very bizarre comment.

If they had half a brain, they would offer a cabin baggage upsize fee to 14kg like many of its competitors do and take in xx millions per year.
 
VA's interline partner/LCC rival Scoot already offers a extra 7KG for a fee on across all their flights, irrespective if it's a 788/789 or a A320/321neo.
 
Better still, offer it fee-free as a perk to their Plats/Business pax :)
Scoot already offer 14kg carry-on default/free for J passengers, including those that booked on multi-leg itineraries with A320/321neos (all-Y) and 788/789s.
 
Norwegian has a good system

LowFare = underseat item only
LowFare + = underseat item + overhead item + checked item. However they caveat the overhead item "if not enough room they will check in the overhead" at the gate. This caveat puts doubt in passenger's mind and some i suspect will just book Flex for not much more to avoid that doubt.
Flex = underseat item + overhead item + 2 checked items

There are size and weight limits for cabin luggage
Lowfare and LowFare+ combined cabin luggage weight = 10kg total
Flex = 15kg

Because Flex have priority boarding, the overhead item is guaranteed space so does not come with the Lowfare+ caveat
LowFare boarding is last.

That is a good system and it ensure PB is enforced as a side bonus. Would FF status play a role in PB and cause a LF, FF pax to use the overhead bins?
