V8 Supercars Partners With Virgin Australia
Virgin Australia will transport V8 Supercar staff and the majority of teams to the 15 Australian events across the country and one in New Zealand, as well as offering fans great savings for flights and holiday packages when they travel to those events.

Hopefully they come up with some good deals. And some perks at the races for DJ status-holders?

Do any of the teams use private jets?

The privates are usually the sponsors, in saying that however, during the Sydney race last year, I commented on FB about the massive number of privates parked on the apron at Syd.

I'm friends with Jason Brights father (a few AFFers have had some remarkable behind the scenes tours of the V8 camps at past meets) and although running a multi million dollar business (who said it was a sport?) they travel no different than the majority of the rest of us.

F1 is a different story. Even Webber travels by private.

I have an idea: 'priority boarding' queues at Bathurst for the entry gate, bus, toilets and food stalls for all Velocity Gold and Plat's

Rydges took over the Mt Panorama hotel yesterday, now that would be a nice place to hold a Virgin Platinum do, wink wink!

Thank the maker, I booked a J seat for my flight to ADL on 2 March - i.e. The Friday of the clipsal 500. The back of the bus is going to be a bogan hell, full of crushed bourbon pre-mix cans.

You obviously have not been to a recent event ?

No. I had the misfortune to get a DJ flight on the eve of the 2010 clipsal 500, back when they were still LCC. Bogan hell, free flowing bourbon premix cans! Also know a few people who love V8s. Are you telling me they've moved on from Jim Beam/Woodstock and cola? CUBs on Canadian club and cola.

If you go to an event you will be hard pressed to see any Bogans, those that are there are in the minority, AVESCO have worked hard to get families to the events. Last event I went to we there was a Bogan presence was Bathurst in 1998, and they were all up the hill!

It is interesting from a brand perception point of view I think a lot of people will think the same way as medhead - V8 is associated with bogans in a lot of people's minds (correctly or incorrectly). The images of people setting up camp at Bathurst with a max limit of i case per person being a "restriction" doesn't help change those opinions.

For me this reinforces the perception of Virgin being a LCC - compared to QF sponsoring/supporting the F1 which is the epitome of glamour.

On reflection though what does intrigue me is that with this and AFL - two very strong Aussie sports - Virgin looks to be taking the australianness identity away from QF.

.

Perception of those not involved perhaps, but those that are as a profession or even a fan know the truth that it's just another business with its audience mostly middle class and corporate Australia, of which 1.7M a year walk through the gates. NASCAR, now that is a different story.....

I don't know they seemed pretty evident wandering around the streets of Adelaide last year, in addition to the family groups.

I fully expect to see drmikki's name here on the thread before too long

I'd hate to disappoint then :-P

Whilst the V8SC is far more bogan than the F1 races (likely price, access and 'prestige' related, although if you get enough drunken Finns at a European F1 race the only thing missing is Holden and Ford flags...) it's certainly a very family-friendly event.

The VA deal is interesting - I guess a few QFF WPs I know will suddenly go back to NB! The only other overseas event this season is the Abu Dhabi F1 race, where the V8s are also running, so I wonder if there is a corresponding Etihad deal for that race?

As for F1, the posters above are both correct - there are a FEW private/charters, but it's largely commercial. The decadence of the 90s/00s is largely gone - the only drivers with their own private jets are Schumacher and Barrichello (I think). Button and Couthard used to share one but sold it, heck, even Frank Williams sold his to buy a wind tunnel (which is one reason why he hardly ever comes to the flyaway races anymore).
In one of the most atrociously poorly thought out risk management strategies ever, there is usually a charter back to the UK in the evening after a race, with the bigwigs of F1management and the teams, and sometimes some drivers on it. Yes, I disagree with this policy completely - if the mining companies can work out that losing all your executives at once in the event of an accident is bad, I fail to see why Mr E doesn't adhere to the same policy... anyway...

On the whole, most of the teams and drivers are flying commercial - I spent an evening in the GRU lounge after Brazil with double world champion Vettel and Rosberg, Webber found out about Dan Wheldon's death when he bumped into Karun Chandhok in Changi after Korea, and woe betide anyone who has to join the checkin queue behind the 40-odd travelling members of the team... (There's always one name confusing the checkin girl and there is ALWAYS excess baggage!)
Although Webber may on occasion jump on the evening charter, he's more than likely in J on commercial - he flew QF SYD-SIN before India and apparently was happily posing with fans as they boarded past his seat!

Of course, the team owners are a different kettle of fish - although I know Tony Fernandes flies commercial (not just AirAsia!), I am not sure how Vijay Mallaya gets around ;) His superyacht may be somewhat more reliable than flying KingFisher....

Finally, the glamour of commercial travel for F1 drivers is the pinnacle -when Heikki Kovalainen was the test driver for Renault he used to be put on EasyJet with a massive bag of spare parts to get to the test dates in Spain :D

When I first saw this thread title I didn't realise the fruit and veg drink was so popular it would be sponsored by Virgin Australia!
