MEL-BNE Breakfast service. Ham and mushroom with french toast on top, fruit salad with passion-fruit syrup and sultana roll. French toast thing was very cheesy and rich but a small serve so just right. I was happy with the presentation and it all tasted delicious. 3/8 in J.

BNE-NTL morning snack. Some kind off bacon and egg tart, yoghurt and the same sultana roll. It was sort of like a combo of a tart and a pie. Again, very nice. The yoghurt with mango in the tub was good too. This wasnt really a substantial meal though. Wine and beer were offered despite the flight departing before 11am (the woman behind me got stuck into the wine - I resisted). 2/6 in J (E190 refurbed flight).

Was not easy to eat with the bone in. Even the crew thought it was odd.

even if meat off the bone tastes sweat, it is odd... to serve something like this on a virgin Australia flight. chicken thighs would have been better, not as dry as the breast, and has enough fat to give it flavour.

Had this chicken meal on OOL-MEL recently -however mine was served in such a small bowl that as soon as you even tried to cut the chicken it pushed all the sauce and rice over the plate and onto the tray! So it was almost impossible to eat (without making a huge mess). Chicken could have been cooked a bit longer as it took some work to get it off the bone so in the end I gave up. Flavour however was good.

No photos sorry but happy to report VA J experience over the weekend.

Both "snack" flights. Both quite tasty.

AM (mid morning) - Goats cheese fetta tart plus sweet muffin and "fruit salad" (diced watermelon, pineapple, strawberry and passionfruit). Alternate "main" option was chicken sandwiches which looked quite nice too.

PM (mid afternoon) - (cold) Smoked trout with potato salad. Ice cream (honeycomb individual tub). Alternate was some sort of salad.

Choice of drinks both times.

The PM tray looked a little "sparse" although was tasty and I wasnt really hungry afterwards, but maybe they should have a bread roll or similar on the tray (cheap and easy filler of both space on the tray and for those who may have missed lunch.....)

Happy also to report all positive for priority boarding, service on board and in lounge, on schedule (particularly given SYD weather!), and the direct lounge entry in SYD (when travelling HLO) I really, really like.

Does anybody know of the meal service has been upgraded on CNS-MEL and CNS-SYD too what the website reflects (3 course lunch and dinners)? I have avoided these routes and gone via BNE for the last three trips but next week and the week after I am doing CNS-SYD at 11:40 both and am hoping for something more than the one tray service.

Regards Brad

3+ hours after 9:30 get lunch. different timings apply for trans con and 3+ hours. You get soup plus the normal lunch tray and the addition of a dessert, normally either ice-cream or something like a slice or pudding.

The thing is I have done these flights many times and have only received a single tray. CNS-MEL and PER-MEL are 5 mins apart in duration but the catering is so far apart!

HBA-MEL 6am. Newspaper selection on seat arm rest. Brekky = mushroom, bacon with relish on toast; stewed fruit and croissant. Juice then coffee in nice cup (ie not obviously an 'airline' cup). Croissant a bit sad looking, but overall very nice.

MEL-HBA 4:10pm. Newspapers looking a bit worn out. Snack = shredded trout on potato salad, roll, white chocolate icecream. Decent pinot gris. Again, all good.

883 to Sydney, jammed packed flight and 8/8 in J. My first time on a sold out Biz cabin. Lets see how the cabin crew go. Good so far, mocktail served, welcomed etc.

So can anyone confirm whether CNS-SYD will be single meal service or 3 course?

After being contacted by VA on Monday regarding catering from CNS still one tray. However the meal was. The best I have ever received from VA very impressed. I asked for a pie to go with my meal and I felt that that made the meal substantial for the length on the flight then other pax asked for the same thing with their meal. All served from trolley. No ice cream sand which on board no biggie but usually loaded. Best Catherine by far from desert to. Main to. Pie. Seriously this is what is needed perminatly on these sectors if three corse not available. Also sweets offered with tea and coffee but declined.

So in this case Brad its another fail on VA's part for failing to provide something substantial (as per policy/rules) but a great job from the Flight Crew in making sure you got what you wanted!

New J menu transcontinental. This was out of Perth - slow cooked beef. Was absolutely wonderful. Went very well with the new Temperanillo red.

The olive oil and dukkah is back.
