More Good News!!

Virgin Australia group of airlines announced that it will codeshare on Hawaiian Airlines services between Sydney and Honolulu and beyond on connecting services to the neighbouring islands of Maui, Kauai and The Big Island. Hawaiian currently operates five weekly flights from Australia, and will increase to year-round daily departures from 14 December, 2011.

Under the new agreement, Virgin Australia’s international airline V Australia will codeshare on Hawaiian operated flights between Australia and the Hawaiian Islands from 31 October, with flights going on sale from today1.

Virgin Australia and Hawaiian Airlines have had an interline agreement in place since 2006, allowing Hawaiian Airlines guests to connect to destinations throughout Australia and New Zealand. This agreement also allows members of Virgin Australia’s frequent flyer program Velocity to earn and redeem frequent flyer points on Hawaiian Airlines flights.

Following the implementation of the code-share agreement, travellers will be able to purchase fares to and from Hawaii through Virgin Australia’s international airline V Australia.

Virgin Australia group of airlines CEO John Borghetti said: “The agreement with Hawaiian Airlines will add another important destination to our global network and provide seamless connectivity for guests wanting to fly on from Honolulu to other islands in Hawaii.

“Hawaii is a key tourist destination and this agreement will take us one step closer to obtaining global flight coverage for our guests”, Mr Borghetti said.

Hawaiian’s President and Chief Executive Officer, Mark Dunkerley, said the new codeshare with Virgin Australia group of airlines was a natural progression and exciting step forward for both companies.

“Hawaii is one of the fastest-growing leisure markets from Australia, and no airline serves Hawaii as comprehensively as we do, with over 170 flights each day from Honolulu to and between the islands,” Mr Dunkerley said.

“The codeshare agreement with V Australia will enable the Virgin Australia group of airlines to offer its guests unparalleled access to Hawaii, using both our flights from Australia and our interisland network,” he said.

“We have been flying Hawaiian skies for over 80 years, and know this market better than any other airline. Now Virgin Australia can utilise our network and expertise to expand its own offerings.”

Would be nice to see lounge access offered but it makes no mention of it. Can we Plz get some international lounges sooner rather than later? :)

A330-200 has the range to do this route as well, even PER-HNL!

Great Stuff VA :D

Probably unlikely that VA/DJ will get its own lounges at SYD/MEL/BNE when NZ have lounges at these airports already & do give access to VA/DJ passengers with status.

... on some flights.

In most cases Pacific Blue passengers on international flights dont get lounge access - except those going to NZ. Nor do passengers on codeshares such as the one with Virgin Atlantic to HK (so it appears) and now it looks (at first glance) like the Hawaiian code share will likely be in the same boat.

I don't think it's unlikely - at least not in the case of Sydney. It may take a while but there have been various media reports that VA, DL and EY are looking at building their own Sydney lounge. Obviously i would like to see it in MEL as it's my home port but i wouldn't be surprised if that took longer.

I see Velocity members can earn points.........would it follow as a natural assumption we'd also earn SCs?

As i understand it booking on the codeshare will earn you the same points/ SCs as if VA themselves had flown the route. No news yet on whether other Hawaiian airlines flight will earn points/ SCs though. Could be an interesting status run to hop between Hawaiian islands for an afternoon or two :)

Yes, I agree or rather than flying N/S to LA, have a stop over in Hawaii

Aren't Delta code share though with no SCs?

I could be wrong but if you book a Delta code share (eg VAxx_x operated by Delta) you earn status credits. Say, you book SYD-LAX-JFK on a VA ticket and LAX-JFK leg is operated by Delta you will earn SCs as though it was a VA flight. If you just book DLxx_x from LAX-JFK you won't (yet) earn any SCs.

As an aside, the press said that these flights would be bookable yesterday and operate from Oct 31st. Still no sign of them on VAustralia web site though.

Yep, have done just this a couple of times now and it's great. It breaks the trip up nicely and you feel reasonably fresh arriving in HNL. Spend a few days there and then a shortish hop to the mainland west coast. Absolutely recommend it if you have time on your hands.

Back to what was a requirement before the 747-400 was introduced. :)
