Virgin Australia Delays/Cancellations

B738 VH-YIR on Wednesday 17 August 2022, the 0945 hours SYD up to NAN took off at 1041 hours so at gate arrival is predicted as 1625, 35 late. This may be due to continuing security checking or baggage loading delays. Return flight VA184, the 1640 hours ex NAN is forecast to depart 55 late.

AFFer Ade says a QFd flight has been delayed due to ice on the exterior, while there's also fog. While I am a long way from the airport, the fog seems to be denser than half an hour ago.

VA800, the 0600 hours first of the morning's SYD down to MEL didn't take off until 0648 hours, and has been in a 'racecourse' holding pattern for many minutes above Mt Buller. Nominal at gate arrival time displaying is 0829, 56 minutes late.

Northbound VA807 (VH-YFH), the 0630 hours MEL-SYD took off at 0715 with at gate arrival likely to be at about 0829, 34 minutes behind schedule.

Despite benign weather, on Wednesday 7 September, VA882, the 1900 hours dinnertime SYD down to MEL took off at 1957 with at gate arrival for B738 VH-VUT predicted as 2114 hours, 39 minutes behind the timetable.

The 1515 hours PER-SYD has B738 VH-YIB that was airborne at 1633, so a 43 minute late arrival at gate at 2218 late this evening is on the cards.

VH-YFU on VA352 (1855 hours BNE-MEL) was in the sky right on 2000 hours so its arrival is predicted to be about 2210, 50 behind.

VH-YIV is on VA49, 1755 BNE-DPS in the sky at 1846 for presumed at gate arrival tonight of 2305 hours, 35 behind.

Punctuality has improved somewhat but remains far from anything approaching perfection.

Monday 12 December 2022 sees VA1411 (0750 hours SYD-CNS) with B738 VH-VOL still in the early stages of taxiing in Sydney at 0938 hours.

FR24 suggests that after operating this and the return VA1416, the plane will then be rostered on the 1700 hours to MEL (VA866). You'd think that a scheduled 145 minute gap between arrival of 1416 and departure of 866 was very generous, and it is, but today if the aircraft sticks to this diagram it will still be tardy departing down to Melbourne.

Lots of delays in Sydney yesterday due to winds and reduced movements. Virgin at least seemed proactive in announcements in the terminal and lounge was quite peaceful. Always grateful to be able to wait it out in (relative) calm with decent food and drinks available.

Rex were pretty woeful. Departure time came and went without any announcements or change to departure times or flight status. I was on VA886, left about 90mins behind and ZL161 80mins late departing (which my partner was on).

Have yesterdays delays continued on to today?

Received notification an hour ago the 5:30pm SYD-OOL has been delayed by an hour. Who knows how long the delay be closer to departure.

The must think the journey ends at the airport. The car is parked at OOL and driving to Brisbane.

....and not a good time to hit the highway between Coolangatta and Brisbane. We drove up around that time on Sunday and it was choc-o-block between Tugan and Mudgeeraba. (although I am guessing a lot of them were coming back from the weekend)

Given the weather is benign so far today according to the BOM, timekeeping is much, much better than yesterday's disaster, but it's still variable between domestic flights.

You do have the alternative of tram/light rail then train. More comfortable than being stuck in traffic, which many Australians seem to love...

As we had too many for our car my wife elected to go via public transport and caught the 777 bus from OOL and then transfered to the tram to North Surfers Paradise (we were only going as far as the JW Marriott in Surfers) It worked well and she got to the Marriott in less than 1 hour.

We drove down 5:00am on Sunday morning and it was very light traffic.

Looks like we won't be able to head back up until ~7:00pm tonight. Traffic should be OK.

VAi is a shadow of its former "old" self, but on Thursday 14 December 2022, VA66 from DPS down to SYD (B738 VH-YIR) should arrive at about 0856 hours, 76 minutes late.

SYD looks to be down to one runway on Wednesday 14 December early afternoon, perhaps due to significant (but far from record) winds?

This is resulting even during the offpeak at 1330 hours in inbound aircraft holding.

It won't help punctuality this afternoon.

VA481 (1130 hours late morning SYD-MCY, B738 VH-VUP) was about to take off by 1356 hours, so is at least two hours late).

UPDATE: VA481 was in the sky at 1400 hours with arrival suggested at 1421, 136 minutes behind schedule.

In Sydney, the north-south runways appear to be reopening at about 1430 hours on Wednesday 14 December, but not before many delays were caused.

While some use them out of necessity for business meetings at 1000 hours, and others make international or other connections, I have a particular dislike for super early morning flights.

It's really annoying when one has risen early yet the first of the morning is delayed. That's what's occurred on Friday 16 December with VA800, the 0600 hours SYD-MEL (B738 VH-YIE) that was not airborne until 0724 hours. Expected at gate arrival becomes 0844, 69 late.

Not quite as bad, but hardly impressive, is VA808, the 0700 hours on the same route and in the same direction, which took off at 0751 for a mooted 0907 hours arrival, 32 behind for VH-YFV.

With the benign weather, punctuality is far better on Saturday 17 December thus far, but VA819 (B738 VH-VUK) is an exception. This 0800 hours MEL-SYD flight took off at 0847 with at gate arrival suggested as 1002 hours, 37 behind.

VA198 (Sunday 18 December's B738 VH-YIT 1655 hours NAN down to MEL) was airborne at 1753 with arrival at its gate predicted as 2223 hours, 53 behind.

Very heavy summer storms at MEL at 1400 AEDT and now at 1730 AEDT on Thursday 22 December.

Water has leaked into multiple terminal areas - see 'Herald Sun' website, or my comments in the equivalent QF delays thread.

Ground staff had to stop work for the earlier one so probably doing the same now.

VA736 (B738 VH-VUP), the 1155 hours OOL-MEL was airborne at 1349 AEST. At about 1730, it was close to MEL but is diverting to CBR.

This may well put aircraft out of position for Friday 23 December, so a lot of travellers won't be pleased tomorrow (as well as tonight).

We were on VA1366 with a 12.30pm departure and delayed and then was told we had to change runway as we approached to take off (or direction?) because of storm winds.

Was trying to get in front of this
