Presumably peeps are booking “VA” flights.
Not being able to select seats via VA is pretty poor.Must be done by calling at this stage as per the information on this page:

Yes that's the problem. Same issue I had when flying ANA on a VA coded revenue ticket despite people saying use ANA PNR etc it simply did not work for seat selection until T-24 and that was on ANA website only. VA have little sway with partners it seems.
I didn’t find it in the booking confirmation email. Either on the page immediately after purchase or in the VA app (I’ll try and do a pic). Here is my original post on my experience. Might still not help you
As you would have been logged into your VA account to make this booking I’m assuming it shows under your “trips” in your VA account.
The “Partner Airline Reference” is not present in the app for these new wet leased flights.
Ugh. How annoying! I suppose because they’re technically, kinda sorta, VA flights. But you can’t select seats on the VA or QR websites??
But in relation to the “wet lease” flights, there shouldn’t be a QR booking reference if booking direct with VA as either cash or points flight.

I appreciate that seat selection isn’t impossible. Requiring people to call and having no option for online seat selection just seems archaic and makes for a poor customer experience. That’s more my point.Virgin Australia and Qatar Airways
As already pointed out at the moment you need to call.

Yeah me too as I booked a J reward using Aeroplan and cannot select seats online, netiher on Air Canada or Virgin, of course there is no QR PNR as it's a VA flight.I thought it might be assigned seating
