Checked a number of dates in August and SYD-PER/PER-SYD is only $305 in flexi.

Looking at SYD-MEL:

Cheapest non-happy hour/sale fare has gone from 103.50 to 105
Cheapest Flexi has gone from 207.50 to 209.

Seems in line with what was announced re: Carbon tax and much the same as i was paying to offset pre carbon tax.

I too usually carbon offset my flights... now call me naive if you will but shouldn't people who offset stay at the old price? :)
I feel the same way about my 100% Green power electricity, that should be getting cheaper andf cheaper too right? Right? :P

If we are to pay more in general it would be nice to earn more SC's in general. I am thinking on reward flights like other airlines and also SC's at the upgraded level on upgrades. Don't care so much about points but SC's are about loyalty, you did actually fly Virgin, and on a reward flight you are flying with them regardless if it is a reward or not.

Unfortunately I'm not a bottemless pit so will need to shop around for the best price even if it means flying with an airline I am not real happy with. It is hard to justify the flexi prices when you esentially get the same as the person who purchased a $79 saver, except your handed a meal. Ability to change the flight is rarely used and now you get charged a fee for it anyway.

SShhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, they may "enhance" the points earning structure...

While in MEL, I read a bit in The Age (Sun. Age I believe) that gave a full page to the carbon tax using a pie graph. It stated domestic air travel was exempt from the carbon tax.
That's incorrect - International travel is exempt, Domestic air travel is not exempt.

Key elements of the Clean Energy Future legislation

A carbon price will not apply to household transport fuels, light vehicle business
transport and off-road fuel use by the agriculture, forestry and fishing industries.
An effective carbon price will be applied to domestic aviation, domestic shipping,
rail transport, and non‑transport use of fuels. Users of these fuels can opt-in to the
mechanism under the Opt-in Scheme.

Yes, may take a while to kick in but that's the wonder of pricing carbon - it drives investment in and economies of scale in less carbon intensive forms of energy. There's a bloody good reason why a carbon price mechanism has (at one point) been the policy of every major Australian political party over the last few years.

As for whether it should be cheaper to offset now, well it serves a different function. It is not about price signals but rather the abatement of the carbon released. Up to you if you still want to do that.

Just booked 8.00am Syd to Perth for next Monday morning for $305 flexi fare.

Return was booked for the same amount next Friday leaving Perth at 4.30pm.
