And then there's the US-based airlines with plenty of regional 1 class flights. Even the "first" class where it is offered often has derisory benefits - the only aspect of first that is correct (albeit misleading) is that it is in the first rows of the a/c.

Mmm now what you mean. Flying on a QF 737-400 here in Aus, if I had a choice between an op-up to J class (ie without SC's) or a Y exit row with guaranteed middle seat empty I'd be seriously tempted to take the latter for the extra leg room offered.

Well you are unlikely to have to make the choice here with Qantas since the only reason they will op-up anyone is if the back to the bus is chockers.

You need to try UA's "p.s." aircraft. Wipes the floor with AA, CO, DL and the rest. I daresay it's even better than the excuse for a First class cabin that UA has on it's international-config 763s. It's true that p.s. is only available on JFK/LAX/SFO routes, but they're about the only domestic sectors I fly, so I don't get much exposure to the so-called 'First' on the rest of the mainline domestic fleet.

Lucky you - PS isn't as bad as the rest (yes I have tried it thanks). My point was that merely having a first class alone isn't providing something useful. Case in point AA midcon redeyes. First doesn't get lounge access. There is no food onboard and no drink other than free water and buy others (even in first). Seat isn't anything wonderful - maybe an extra couple of inches. No IFE. Poor recline.

yeah I know it, it has been a while since an op-up (Jul 03 IIRC - twice in the same weekend, nothing for a year before that and nothing since).

I was purely speaking hypothetically, as once I used UC's to do an ODU on a 734 MEL-DRW (they were expiring), giving up my exit row seat. What I didn't realise at the time was that when the guy in front reclined I could no longer use my laptop (NO RECLINER vs NON RECLINER DEBATES PLEASE!), something I didn't expect in J, and would have been better off (from getting work done perspective) in the Exit Row down the back!
