Well at first I thought this was a bug in the booking engine but a call to the Guest Contact Centre confirms it....

Guests travelling in Premium Economy with Virgin Blue can now take a massive 69KG of checked luggage with them  :D

The agent I spoke to told me that the Premium Economy product is currently being 'enhanced' but couldn't provide me with any more details as she hadn't been informed herself.

Guess we will just have to watch this space ;)

Josh :p

Indeed. It's also published on their website:

Virgin Blue Fare Types
69KG allowance included for travel after 9 December
32KG allowance included for travel prior to 9 December

Polynesian and Pacific Blue seem to have some changes in purchasing 23kg on the lower end fares as well.

The baggage allowances are being standardised across the "Blue" airlines of the Group.

69kg is very generous and a good move for DJ to wrest away the corporate market. I wonder if the 32kg that Velocity Golds get also applies, thereby a Gold flying DJ PE would be able to carry 101 kg.

I don't get the impression that the allowances accumulate. So I think it is 32kg in non PE, and 69kg in PE.

As a frequent traveller I dont find 60+ kilos of baggage allowance something to shout about, travelling with that amount of luggage is a PITA and something I have sworn I would never do again. I am sure the baggage handlers are pleased with the news.

It does say this on the PE page:

Complimentary checked baggage allowance up to 69kg (if travelling on or after 9 December 2010) if possible, when you bring between 23kg and 32kg of checked-baggage please split the weight over several bags to prevent injury to our Ground Staff)

Not sure what they would do if you rocked up with 69kg in one bag!!

Check the bag for a dead body;)

That is quite a massive allowance but I doubt many people would even get near it.

If you have a marketing department that decides you are better than a courier for the brochures and event packs, I can assure you 60kg is not much :D

They would make you repack it. Or at least they should...

OHS requirements pretty much globally specify that no single item can weigh more than 32 kg. Even if your allowance was more than that, you would need to split the load across checked bags so that each one weighed less than 32 kg. (In some cases, the maximum weight per item is less, e.g. America flights where most Y policies state that each piece can't weigh more than 23 kg, but 32 kg is the "absolute maximum" based on OHS requirements.)
