Virgin FF'ers experience on Qantas

But you've got not much better an option with QF - their seats are available to select anytime, and row 4 is blocked for CL - you've got a better chance of getting row 3 on DJ. Exception is at T-80 where QF open it up so you may be able to select row 4 - but it's a small window of opportunity.

On DJ row 4 actually seems to have more room than rows 5 and beyond, and rows 3/4 are blocked for Gold and Plat with no such thing as CL. I'd say the odds are much better, also considering there are a lot less elite tier members on DJ.

For the past year the majority of my economy flights on QF 737's have been row 4. Usually 4D. When in business I've been in 1A on every single one.

I thought Virgin Australia has a VIP tier too, but not sure how is a member.

I tend to agree, I have better luck with selecting QF row four more often, and as per previous post below generally select seats much later than T-80. if the plane is not full the middle seat of row 4 is often blocked.
If not row 4 then generally I think the system does tend block out the middle seat if the plane isn't full - I have had to learn to trust QF on that one.

Rubbish. I am seated in 4a or 4f nearly every time I fly on a qf 737. I'm not CL and have frequently a spare seat next to me.

I didn't say you can't get row 4, and
I didn't said you won't have a spare seat, all I said was it is blocked for CL only until T-80.

That means you only have an 80 hour window before the flight to select it, and secondly it is possible for all row 4 seats to go to CL members before T-80 (if they are traveling with others it is entirely possible). At T-80 anyone can select row 4, so again you have to be on the ball and pretty quick to select it.

Whereas on Virgin, Row 3 is only available to Plat and Gold, apart from airport checkin where the staff can assign any empty seats. You can select it 2 weeks ahead, so yes, if you book at the last minute then you might not get row 3.

Thanks for explaining. I guess I misunderstood the initial post, so yes, you are correct in what you say! (someone else I now need to buy a beer for! :-) )

No worries at all! :) (but I would never say no to a free beer either!)

I've had pretty good luck in the past with row 4 on QF as well, but I must say my luck with DJ has been even better. When I'm not in J, I've had row 3 on all but 2 flights in the last 6 months. One of those 2 flights was row 4 (which I think has about 33" seat pitch - its definitely more than row 5 and beyond). The other was row 7, but in that case I'd only booked the day before so I thought that was still pretty good!
