Based on the assessment that Tiger would exit the market if it didn't proceed.....

What a surprise, all that director speak from Tiger about Tiger being here for the long haul was rubbish. Shock horror.

lets hope Virgin doesn't reap what it looks like its sowing.

Will TT be any better under VA than it was alone? I realise that fares will rise, but TT will still the the bottom-feeder of the market.

Anyone know if this means Tiger can access the Australia-International market?

Can we honestly expect anything to improve from this deal.... Even in its public image...

Honestly :? Time will tell I guess, but I still stand by my stance - You couldn't pay me even to fly Tiger!!

JQ was the same. I'm sure TT can be a better airline under the guidance of VA, although it'll be interesting to see their two brand strategy vs QF's.

So what's on the agenda ?

Higher fares ?
Moving some routes over to Tiger to cut costs, AKA the constant Qantas/Jetstar take over

Hmmmmm

Tiger / VA joint venture

I just read this on the Tiger Airways facebook page. Does anyone know more?

We’re delighted to announce that the ACCC has given us the green light for the joint venture between Tiger Australia and Virgin Australia. This is great news for Tiger and most importantly great news for consumers.

We are thrilled with the outcome which will help create a stronger and more competitive Tiger Airways Australia, with you our customers in mind

We will now be working with Virgin Australia to finalise all remaining matters for the new venture to take flight. Watch this space for exciting developments…

I have no doubt that Tiger will improve - most importantly by getting some more planes to cover delays. Maybe even *shock horror* moving pax to VA flights rather than leaving them stranded with a $20 meal voucher!

The more important issue is rising fares - either VA will be smart and use TT to drive fares down against QF or simply bring fares up to VA-20% levels and settle into a cosy duopoly.

People that fly TT won't be comparing them with Qantas
TT will just compete directly with Jetstar, as they do now, but will raise prices to match, as JQ are generally $10-$50 higher than TT

VA to take 60% stake in Tiger

MELBOURNE--Australia's antitrust regulator won't block Virgin Australia Holdings Ltd.'s (VAH.AU) 35 million Australian dollars (US$36 million) acquisition of a 60% stake in low-cost carrier Tiger Airways Australia, a move that will allow it to go head-to-head against rival Qantas Airways Ltd.'s (QAN.AU) no-frills Jetstar unit.
In deciding not to oppose the deal, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, or ACCC, said that without a takeover Tiger--which hasn't made an operating profit in six years operating in the country--was "highly unlikely" to remain in the local market.
"The ACCC would always prefer to see a greater number of independent airlines competing in the domestic market," it said in a statement Tuesday. "However, our investigations showed that Tiger Australia had been unable to establish itself as a viable competitor despite substantial investment and numerous changes of management and strategy over the years."
Virgin Australia is the second-largest domestic airline operator in Australia, behind Qantas. It counts among its largest shareholders entrepreneur Richard Branson's Virgin Group, Air New Zealand Ltd. (AIR.NZ) and Singapore Airlines Ltd. (C6L.SG).
Singapore Airlines has an almost 33% stake in Tiger Airways Holdings Ltd. (J7X.SG), which will retain a 40% stake in Tiger Airways Australia.
