And the SQ partnership is probably in line with the way SQ treats star alliance elites, except perhaps can be problematic at some outstations (who is Virgin Australia???). Full star alliance membership probably would do little to change the way SQ treats VA elites, in fact it might even get worse! You really need to be PPS or above on SQ's program (not even Krisflyer Gold) to start feeling some "status love" on SQ.
Agree SQ outposts are difficult. It took a lot of discussion with the check-in agent in Hanoi to get him to speak to his supervisor who seemed aware of VA. He kept trying to tell me that VA wasn't in Star Alliance. I was showing him a screenshot from the website and he was getting all confused because he could also see references to Air Berlin and Etihad! They eventually gave me a priority tag but explained no lounge access as it's one they have to pay for per usage. He did make an effort to give me decent seats.
