OBVIOUSLY if they walk up half hour before the flight, then they may not get CHOICES of catering, but regardless, the same should apply to EVERYONE in the cabin, as they have all paid, regardless of how / when they have paid. There should be enough for everyone that could be in the cabin, and EVERYONE should have the same level of service.

EVERYONE should have the same level of service? But OBVIOUSLY pax who walk up half an hour before might get a lower level of service?

No, everyone in that cabin should get the same level of service, and that should be the advertised service, which is usually coices, and there is always a clause to say that all choices may not be available. Thats fine, nobody in their right mind would expect every passenger to have choices and be given that choice, but their should be, for example at least 8 catered spots on a 737, 6 on an embraer, and thats that. I dont care whether its Virgin, Qantas Tiger, whatever, if a class of travel is offered, you should recieve what is offered / sold. In this instance, I think Tiger is the best / most consistant, as you know exactly what you will get. Amazes me how people will accept the mediocre standards and be happy with it. Whats next? "Screw you sir, we only loaded water and biscuits today, so there you go, but its ok because its wrapped up in a pretty purple napkin, and you will feel superior sitting up here"
Im not knocking virgin here, just the general acceptance fanbois and fanatics have of accepting the cough that is dished out and being happy. Fair dinkum, if you pay big bucks for a J seat and accept the fact you wont be getting any J service, then thats your business, but its also my choice to think that is insane.

Sorry but what are you struggling with? If you are advised BEFORE YOU PURCHASE that catering is not assured that is the advertised level of service. My point, simply is at ADVERTISING THAT IN ADVANCE is the best possible compromise between over catering and misleading customers. As long as they know what to expect before purchasing then I'm fine with it and that is why most airlines (not just VA) do it that way.

Is there really a better way to do it? There are so many contradictions in what you're saying I can't actually figure out what you even propose.

Cannot be more simple..... If you have a product for sale it should be consistant, not this and that, maybe you will, maybe you wont, i like to buy something knowing that i will recieve what i have paid for, you obviously enjoy purchasing a mystery box, and take what you are given. Again thats fine. Rather than engaging in a slanging match i will agree to disagree that its a cough system, and will remove myself from this thread, letting you enjoy the wonderful licky dip that Virgin has become

Who do you choose to fly with in business class domestically? I assume it's not Qantas.

Isn't "catering not assured" on last minute upgrades an industry wide practice? If its unique to virgin and they are uniquely bad then, yeah, they need to lift their game compared to others but I actually thought it was pretty much the norm. My mistake if it isn't.

Probably the real point here is that i believe they have two different products for sale. One is a business class fare or pre booked and assured business class upgrade. The other is last minute upgrade. One product should assure catering and the other does not. A consumer can then make an educated decision about what they are happy to purchase providing they have been warned in advance of what the conditions are. I really can't see any problem with that. As you say yourself if you don't want a mystery box don't buy one.

I think what Mark is getting at is that if there are 6 J seats on an Embraer, and they're offering 3 choices, they should be expected to plan for and load (3 x 6) 18 meals, even if they only have 1 J pax... After all they should have plenty of space because aircraft cabins are known for their capacious environs. ;)

Absolutely.. I've seen it every time on QF.. also had CNA on Y flights where i have taken an earlier flight. However to date On one occasion I was told i would need to wait for them to serve other pax first (i have no issue with that), but on every occasion I have always had a meal. Even an OP UP on i was told CNA but still got breakfast

Not what I am saying at all, thats just a stupid statement. <redacted>
