Virgin to remove bagfree fares from Domestic Routes

I cross-posted this to OZBargain and an employee of VA gave some more information:
ozbargain.com.au/node/184582(sorry, still cannot post a link)

In summary:

  • People who normally purchase Saver Lite fares will now pay about $15 more. In exchange they will be able to check in a bag and get food on board. In some cases they will receive the bag/food for the same price as before.
  • People who normally purchase Saver fares will still pay the same price but now get food included.
  • Jaktogo users can now check in their luggage and travel a little more comfortably. :)

Doesn't everybody get some type of food now?that just means a fare increase. The reference to 'in some cases' could mean when on sale ( even higher sale pricing?) or VA have been slotting in Lower fares at certain times of day like JQ hot fares, that means when most would prefer not to travel.this isn't surprising given VAs relatively mediocre 1/2 year announcement, there is a push for cash on and the bag free fare is low hanging fruit to bean counters

VA have really learned how to spell enhancement ;)

Not that I really care personally.

AirNZ have been very clear and public that they have run out of patience and 'it is time for VA to make some money'!

What a roundabout way of saying "we want saver lite people to pay for saver"

People keep banging on about wanting them to be a proper full service carrier. The bags, and whatever the changes to food are about, would suggest that this is just another step toward that goal. It's what everyone around here wanted, isn't it?

Well it would be nice if they hurry up and roll the snacks out across all flight routes... especially now they are removing the saver light fares.

The website has been updated and its even more inconsistent.....

- One page now says snack on selected routes
- One page says snacks on the routes A,B,C,D etc.
- One page says included tea, coffee and water.
- One page says included tea, coffee and water and juice.

Even the menu on the site is different again and makes it seems like no more juice on flight where there isn't a snack.

The snacks are barely worthwhile. This on a lunchtime SYD-BNE. All over in 2 bites.

What the heck is a Jaktogo? I assume hand luggage, but where did this word come from?

And you're surprised by this??? You missed out the final line which should read "then you board the flight and find out it's something entirely different again"!

I've long since stopped trying to pre-guess what culinary delight (cough) will (or perhaps more correctly, will not) await me! :(

Also in response to the VA profit bit.......didn't they show a reasonable profit in their last quarter? Maybe they just want the "lower end" to shove off to TT.

One of the reasons NZ are so profitable is that they make very unpopular decisions that pax don't like but they live with.

It would be understandable they would want VA to do the same.

As long as VA keep their sale fares the same or similar it doesn't bother me!

What strong customer feedback ? I don't recall Virgin ever asking me or may be it's because I was stacked down by tons of carry on baggage.

Thanks for the info Standby. I certainly am disappointed not to have a bag-free option to save a few bucks.
Is there a link to the whole release? was curious to know if there was any other details.
Cheers

Sorry cut & paste the bit about the bag free then deleted the email( and I trash the delete box daily)
the rest was about bag free staying on the Tasman. You'd expect this to stay aligned to codeshare and part owner NZ

It's disappointing. You can still be a full service airline and offer discount fares for HLO. It would be a marketing point to set you apart from your competitor.
