Virgin upgrade likelihood if you choose your own seats?

Every time, touch wood, I fly since Velocity X has started I always get an upgrade (VA Gold) domestically (usually from checkin counter and then if no luck the lounge angels) from my pre picked seat. Even if it is row 14 & 15 exit rows.

I always pre select an aisle to have more stretch room and easy access to walk around when I get tight.
You have more luck than this VA Gold!

I ask politely and I never expect any special treatment.

Another thing I just thought of is how early you get to the airport perhaps??

I would consider myself someone who enjoys time at the airport and the process of it all so I am quite often very early...

Depends on the day and how much time I want to spend in the lounge - now that I have access, I do like to relax and eat before the flight, instead of on board (most trips are to Perth). I don't ask for another seat, mostly because the once or twice I tried it when economyX came in, I was refused. Maybe I should try again, or see if I get allocated something nice on an upcoming trip instead of pre-selecting a seat. Personally even though I am 6'5" and with long legs, I can sit fine in a normal seat for a few hours, so don't really wish to spend another $50-$70 on something a little more comfortable.

The only time I have received something special so far was a Trans-Tasman flight on a VA codeshare operated by AirNZ - early Monday morning CHC-MEL. Given Row 3, had it to myself, which was great. Stretched across and snoozed off. Woke up about 90 mins later, crew from the front came and asked if I wanted a left over breakfast from Business. Refused as I had over-indulged in all sorts of breakfast in the lounge, but still really appreciated the offer.

I will be WP in February hopefully, so I guess I'll be seeing more of economyX (especially since more 737s are appearing on transcon)
