Would not be a good enough offering to make me swap but I also live in a Telstra only area.

Vodafone will make its $5 a day option for international roaming available in 34 European countries from next week, it announced today.
The European availability will be switched on from Monday, 7 October, and expands on Vodafone's original offer, which was limited to the US, UK and New Zealand.
Among the eligible European countries include Belgium, Croatia, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Spain and Turkey.
The $5 daily roaming offer was originally unveiled back in July.

Excellent news... they said they've move quickly with expanding the countries.
Now we just need Asia on board.

WOW this is good news - just upgraded on Sunday from previous Vodafone Infinite to new Vodafone Infinite which allows access to these rates.

YES I know many here would ask why? Simple - the Vodafone Infinite just works for me.

Old plan was known as Infinite - YES new ones are RED Infinite - new plan I signed up for Sunday is RED and does have the roaming offer.

This is great news for those who are on this Vodafone plan, AND travel to these destinations for short periods, especially if you're moving between these countries at a fast pace, and need to keep the one number.
But, if you were in one of these countries for more than about 5 days, you'd be better off getting a local SIM card that includes data. For example, in the UK the 3 telco has a prepaid SIM for £15 a month that includes lots of local calls, text, and unlimited data.

Yes, I also wish that Telstra would match Vodafone's offer. But I doubt that they need to, given that Vodafone has admitted recently that they lost over 500,000 customers in just the first 6 months of 2013.

I left two yrs ago due to woeful coverage (Sydney) and tempted to go back because of this Red Roaming offer.

A lot of those customers were not real, the sales centre had a scam going where extra SIMs were sent so they could claim commission, which I believe was paid per connection, not per $$ raised.

I'd say it's not Optus customers that are dumb, just consumers in general don't realise. It's far too easy to have international roaming enabled now.

When I first went o/s with a GSM phone (I was on Vodafone at the time, back in 1999), I had to cough up a $250 security deposit, and sign a form advising I was aware of the call costs (this was pre-data) and agreeing to pay for anything I used.

These days, a quick phone call to your provider will have roaming enabled with a "now you know calls and data are not taken out of your cap don't you?' and provided a link to the costs. It's the telco's fault, IMHO, that people are getting these bills. If people were forced to sign something or pay a security deposit, people may actually think twice about using their phones.

Also, it's a pretty ordinary deal from Optus. Whilst I don't like Vodafone, their offer for $5/day to use your included cap is much better value (considering most their data packs are huge on postpaid).

This has now been extended to 46 countries, including many in Asia as of 23 Jan 2014: Vodafone Red Roaming now including Asia - Vodafone Community - 306701

From the 23rd of January we'll be expanding our popular $5 per day roaming offer to selected Asian countries including; China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore, Japan & Thailand. This means that our customers with Vodafone Red Plans will be able to use their existing call, text and data inclusions from their monthly plan for just an extra $5 a day.
Vodafone now has 46 countries included in its international roaming offer, including the United States, New Zealand, United Kingdom and Europe which represents almost 80% of all overseas trips by our customers.
Last year Australians made 2.4 million trips to Asia with tourists flocking to Thailand and Bali for short getaways.
Just to recap the 46 countries included in Red Roaming are as follows:

WOW China real bonus for me. Restricted to 45 days in calendar year though that might be a bit restrictive.
