It’s been a good winter for rainfall in south western Australia this year. The farmers are happy and looking forward to a record harvest if the rains continue into September.

It also means it’s a good wildflower season so the weekend before last, with forecast fine and sunny weather at least until Sunday afternoon, I jumped in the car early Saturday morning and headed north. The route was the inland road north to Kalbarri and the coastal road back south.

The wildflowers and views in Kalbarri NP and along the coastal cliffs were pretty spectacular, so I thought a mini TR may be of some interest.

The route. It’s too early for the best of the wildflowers in more southern areas (the progression of the peak is roughly mid-August around Geraldton to late September around Perth and November on the south coast). I high-tailed it to Mingenew, then cruised through to Kalbarri via parts of the NP for the rest of Saturday. Sunday morning it was back into the park, then along the ocean cliffs S of Kalbarri before hightailing it back to Perth in the afternoon as the next cold front came whipping in with more of that beautiful rain.

Crops looking excellent. Canola in full bloom really is a beautiful sight :). Gorgeous day .

Hmnnn, don't know why the images were resized; they were all made the same. Maybe will not upload in batches in future posts.

Excellent! we are off to Cervantes next week, I would have liked to get up to Kalbari, but swmbo wanted 2 days in Perth and 2 days in Margaret River, so we don't have enough time. Like the photos! :)

Too bad - it is an absolutely cracker season in Kalbarri NP and the peak is now! There were some Queenslanders in the park that I spoke to and they were mesmerised. He said they were sceptical about 'this WA wildflower thing' - but not any more!

More pics coming...

Where are you from?

Canberra, don't blame us, you send the pollies here! :) My wife's sister is visiting here from Vancouver as well.

I’m not going to try to name plants. I’ll let the pics (in no particular order – just working through temporally, so sorry for any repetition) do the talking.

It's OK - I'll be there late next week for a few days with friends on my drive from Perth to stay in the Hunter Valley until November :).

Just a pity you can't get further north as it's a particularly good season this year in that rich area - although the sandplains around Cervantes will be good, albeit a little early. And, of course, Margaret River has its own attractions :).

And you're not going to try and catch up with AFFers here?

Of course - I was waiting for you to ask :p.

Seriously, I was going to contact you. I arrive late Saturday 17 Sept and leave after breakfast Tuesday 20 Sept. Staying with friends, so my free time to shoot through elsewhere, especially at night, is limited.

They both work, and I want to catch up with old colleagues lunchtime Monday 19th. What about that morning for a coffee?

Aww shucks :)

Sent you a PM. When sorted will contact others to see if they are around too....

Love WA wildflower season but tend to go south for the ground orchids.

We have been to WA a couple of times for wildflower season and absolutely love it. a few days North on one trip and a few days South on another.

One of nature's great efforts

Great pictures JohnM! You have just become a tourist ambassador for WA so well done. We went to the Dowerin Field Days and it was lovely to see so much canola growing seeing wheat prices have tumbled.

great photos - yet another thing on the list to do
