We'll be a disaster for Qantas: Delta

Why would they be a disaster for Qantas? They have a single flight, which only leaves from Sydney, with no connections to anywhere else in Australia, and whilst the brand has been heard of (i'd say quite a few aussies have heard of the Delta airline at one point in time), it's a unknown product for most Australian's.

Qantas \ Virgin are both well known brands with an excellent precences here. Most aussie's who has flown has probably flown on one of these two.

it kinda reminds me of the kid who thought they could move in and waltz over everyone else. (from memory the rest of the story goes they run home with their tail between their legs)

I remember the old Continential SYD - LAX via HNL route. My first int trip nearly 20 years ago was on one of them. (It was on a B742 from SYD to LAX and an L-1011 from LAX - HNL \ B742 to SYD if I remember right)

Just that traffic goes both ways.

While Delta may be less familiar to Australians, QF has only a couple of points of presence in the US, compared to both Northwest and Delta which have many. Passengers in the US are much more familiar with them, and they have many more frequent fliers. Opening up a service will re-direct interest from US-outward bound pax for their primary destination, which is usually Sydney (just as V Australia focussed on LA first).

While it may not have much impact on prices locally (particularly compared to V Australia), it may have a greater impact on prices out of the US hitting QF that way.

I agree, Delta is a well known brand over in the US. But they didn't say they'll be a disaster for United.

Also the other three (Qantas \ Virgin \ United) all have code sharing agreements with other airlines on both sides of the pacific, so whilst United only has direct flights to a couple of ports here, and virgin \ qantas only fly to a couple of ports over there, they have code shares \ partners on each side that will help their customers get to where they need to go outside the port of entry.

Delta has no one (yet).

Delta and Virgin Blue are interlining. So Delta will put their pax onto DJ services I presume and VA will put theirs onto DL/AS in the states.

Interesting... I checked on the Delta website and so far Sydney is the only place in Oz that Delta has. Also I'd find it strange that DJ would want to help a competitor getting into a market it wants to fly in as well. I can't imagine VOZ was too happy to hear about Delta coming in with significantly less risk than themselves since Delta already had a long haul product, so minimal purchases where required.

Delta may very well hurt VA more than they hurt QF. They provide another possibility for the "I don't like QF" crowd to use and VA don't have a loyal following as yet.

Interesting to note that Brett Godfrey has said that they are happy with VA's loads but not with the yields. That's a bit of a strange admission from the company that started the price plunge :?:

I think the real opportunity for both VA & DL is to increase their co-operation not their competition with each other. Both have extensive networks at their respective ends of the journey to complement each other and compete with the QF/AA behemoth in a way either individual airline could not. In fact one could envisage a scenario making sense where DL focuses on the SYD market and VA on MEL/BNE. Whatever the case interesting times ahead. Wonder what it all means for UA?

Of course their's always Virgin America, but that would really restrict things for VA.

It's minimal so far, but V Australia updated their website some days back so that you could make bookings to a few more US destinations e.g New York interlining with Delta (or "Partner airline" as they refer to them).
