Another article in the AFR about the upcoming changes. No new info, but some anecdotes that show you there are people who use P+P and thus will warmly welcome Classic+:
“I got fed up trying to find seats on Qantas and have just swapped to Singapore Airlines’ KrisFlyer program,” says Long, who is in Bali.

“I’ve still got Qantas but last time I booked business class to London I paid nearly 2 million points, which is ridiculous.”

Focus on the millions of points earner cause he’s running a business (earning on other people’s money)
Most employed people do not have that $$ to splash nor points 2,000,000 to splash on J to London

The “return on investment (of other people’s money) Earn rate is around 2% of spend

From their public 2024 half yearly report they touted something like 15,000 sales

Qantas must love that guy in the article. At points plus pay rates, unless his suppliers don’t surcharge credit cards or discount cash/bank transfer unlike most businesses - the guy in the article would be better off buying cash J fares to London.

He is essentially surcharging himself to higher fares. 🤣

But seriously, does this continued delay in announcing the changes imply potential modifications after the lukewarm at best reaction to "leaked" changes? I mean they're now three months post when this was initially supposed to be announced iirc...

Yes I have wondered that too but maybe IT issues as well. But big call not to deliver as someone in the media may point out didn't happen before April. Interesting strategy.
 
Delay is interesting. I can think of two reasons for pre announcing: the need to warn investors of a known upcoming impact to the bottom line, and, to try to generate positive PR.

Qantas have been known to pre-announce things with shifting timelines (eg. Sunrise) which makes me less inclined to think they would stall the headline based on IT issues (they could promote it with future release dates).

So I think it's strategic timing. Perhaps they want to get through Easter unscathed first (saw an article today about various backup things they have in place) and then perhaps go big in a quieter media period in early April.

Could even be an April 1 announcement...

I'm not sure there's a 'delay' - I interpret 'by April' as April 30, and it seems a lot of the media outlets reporting on it think the same (i.e. the changes will be announced in April).

It’s a forecast - a floating flotsam deadline

Hopeful of

On or before but the inference would be you wouldn’t be leaving it until midnight on 30th April as that’s almost May and you’d be running late

A most unreasonable person would argue that still meets “done by (end of) April
A more reasoned logic would be done earlier than later in April
by sometime during April or before April was out

By April is away of saying before May but each tells us something about the goal and the company who proposes to use “by April” instead of “before May”
They want to appear to be quicker not slower

Classic case of semantics and "by" seems to have a split camp as to interpretation.

Eg does "by" nean before the date, or inclusive of the date?

I did a bit of googling on this (not being an English professor) and it seems split. Context is everything.

If I say "I expect to be paid by Friday" is it before Friday, or before the end of Friday? I know if *I* said that to someone, my expectation is before the start of Friday. Clearly others take the inclusive definition.

It's all moot really given QF will announce when they choose but is one of those interesting quirks of interpreting English - or rather how it can be ambiguous. If QF said we'd announce "by the end of April" then that is clear.

And we know wording is often not a strong suit for QF

Probably an announcement after the Easter holidays, after everyone has travelled and then now thinking about booking their next holidays.
They will announce, then release classic awards along with the new amounts, resulting in the mixed class (or priced) bookings.

I can't see the point of announcing before the holidays start when most have already booked travel. After travel would be the target market.

But any normal CR seats released or only everything at the new tier. I agree with your sentiment re new travel though. As I said above interesting strategy.
