Went to cancel ANZ Black, retention successful

To the uninitiated. There's an "Internet Banking" offer which gives $0 annual fee but the difference is $2500 spending in the first 3 months (not after the first eligible payment). Some on OzB forums say it works without being an ANZ customer. I took the safer route and created a saver account and accessed the offer within the website.

I've just had a look at my ANZ internet banking looking for offers and I could not find any cards that have a FF point bonus sign up offer that had the annual fee waived for the first year. All the FF cards I found had some of the annual fee refunded back to the card.

No mind anyway, I would have to sit out the 12 months anyway......Now on to Westpac.

It's the offer/URL quoted in my previous post - ANZ Frequent Flyer Black offer | ANZ

Discussion on OzBargain.

Thanks, yes, I knew that, I'm on my second ANZ card after having ditched the last one in late 2015.

My missus gets a bit pissed at ANZ. She's had a home loan with them for years and has a visa that came with the loan and gets nothing but a statement out of them.

I come along and snare 125000 points out of them and I'm not a customer. But she does enjoy the points upgrades.

I'm considering their ANZ Low Rate credit card and do a phantom $15000 ANZ Balance Transfer to another card and use that $15000 to sit in my offset for 15 months since there's no transfer rate (only annual fee of $58). That'd be a quick savings of $725+ for me...

Wife called to cancel this card as was coming up to 12 months, best they could offer was 1/2 price annual fee which we declined.

Cancelled mine a few days ago - no retention offer. Never mind, got the 75k bonus points, 2 QF lounge passes and 75 status credits out of it....moving on......

They only waived 50% off the annual fee for me. I should have persisted. The annual fee isn’t worth it with the Veloce Lounge list being non existent unless you fly to the Arabian Gulf.

My annual fee would have been charged on 20 December. I called on 3 December and asked what they could do to retain me - all that was offered was the 50% off annual fee. I stated that a new customer receives no annual fee, bonus points and status credits, was a flat out refusal to consider giving me anything like that. So I proceeded to cancel the card. Will wait for the 12 month exclusion period and reapply if the offer is still bonus points and no annual fee. Crazy to not try to retain customers but I am not surprised. I wonder how many of us there are who actively do this.

I just remembered this morning that my free first 12 months was up on Sunday (when 12th statement was issued), so called today to see what they could offer to retain me - same as everyone else reduced annual fee of $212.50, so I cancelled the card.

Right now for my next visa best options seem to be:
1. SGB Amplify with $0 first year fee, 80k FF point sign-on bonus for $4k spend in 90 days and 0.75 point / $ or
2. NAB Signature Card for $295 fee, 90k FF point sign-on bonus for $4k spend in 60 days and 1 point /$.

Based on last years Visa spend (given most spend is on Amex):
SGB Amplify would net me 93.5k points for $0 or
NAB should see me net 108k points for $295 - the extra 14.5k points, would work out costing 2c per point, tempted to go SGB.

Just cancelled my ANZ black. No attempt at retention. Didn’t even ask why I was cancelling

Same here. Cancelled - no offer, no questions. I was surprised as I put a lot through that card!

Covered in other threads, there are new rules - if you ask to cancel the bank must cancel.

Yup, new rules! I cancelled mine a week ago.

Though, I did not call asking to cancel. I specifically said I was not expecting the Annual Fee as it was waived the previous year, so I was transferred to a senior member who was quite blunt (in a courteous way) that it was done previously as a goodwill gesture, and it wasn't forever.

And as a repeat goodwill gesture, they can offer me 50% on my fees only! They had charged me $370 for the annual fee, $110 for the rewards program ($55 each), $10 for the additional card holder. Discount of 50% was getting to $277.50 ($185+$27.50+$55+$10). I said it's too expensive, and asked can you do any better to which they replied NO.

So I asked for it to be cancelled and they immediately cancelled (and reversed the charges).

Cancelled the ANZ Black after ~22 months. The original offer back in 2018 was good but to be honest at this point in time, it makes no sense to keep this card with even half the fee. Especially their "lounge" offering is a complete joke and ANZ would be better off not offering anything than their current Veloce program - All this time, it got me two coffees and an average haloumi pie in Doha!

My annual fee for the Black card is due next month...I had the card fee free for the 1st year, 1/2 fee last year, and i was wondering if they would offer me 1/2 fee again this year...any recent experiences?

all of the above are recent experiences.
its plain and simple, if you ask to cancel, by law they must cancel it and they cannot offer you any incentative not to cancel.

So, the first step in your strategy, is to call up and DO NOT say the "C" word. Tell them the benefits are not worth the annual fee they are charging. Let us know how you go.

I have no experience here but would have thought saying I like the card but can get cheaper/ better value cards card (annual fee wise), can you offer a discount may work. Would be good to hear if anyone has tried this.

Asked whether I could have a 50% fee waiver like last year and it was somewhat reluctantly given. May still cancel the card yet...
