What a ... [reclining dispute]

You misunderstand, ashleyn. They don't recline to sleep - they recline for "comfort". By which I mean they recline to reduce the comfort of the person behind, who is obviously inferiior and has no need to watch a movie or read a book or try to work.

I recline to sleep - that is the only justifiable reason to do so IMHO, but the world is full of "reclining disputes" it seems.

I get it Moody, believe me. That is why I fly J or choose exit row. Problem solved.

Managed to watch the screen just fine recently and could still move my legs with a reclined seat in front of me. At 6'2" and 90kg I'm not the smallest person you'll see in Y. The only thing I ask is that the seat be upright when we're eating.

Whats the procedure then if someone does actually want to work? (I usually avoid working on the plane if at all possible)
Fully reclined means no work basically.

If someone wants to work in Y, they basically need to suck it up. Their own fault for not finishing work earlier or flying J! ;p

The converse (de-reclining a seat) can also cause issues:

Many years ago when I was less experienced in the ways of the world, I hit the button to bring my seat to the upright position and it flicked up with a jolt. Cries and swearing from behind, where the pax's drinks on his tray table went flying!

Recline / not reclined - you can't please some people ;)

These days I never recline.

Had a young lady in front of my seat in Y one time going to HNL, had it all the way back, I bumped it (seat back) few times, she asked what was that, said sorry can't use the table sorry the seat is too far back, she moved it half way up, decent person and problem solved.

Whats the point of laptop power then...its just asking for trouble.
It's just a regular power outlet. You can charge any number of devices that may not use USB to charge (or if you want to charge your iPad as the USB ports on most aircraft do not supply sufficient power to charge an iPad).

Seat reclining doesn't bother me, all I ask is don't kick my seat, recline away. Was on a flight from Sydney to Nadi and I had my 6 month old in my arms and it was night so I reclined but the person behind me kept kicking my seat, I turned and asked if he could stop bumping my seat (I didn't explain because I was holding a baby and we really needed the sleep because we had flown from Perth to Sydney then onto Nadi); well his wife went nuts! Telling me I am rude and I shouldn't recline my seat, blah blah blah. After seeing my baby she calmed down a "little". What was very awkward, guess who was staying at Castaway Island resort with us? You guessed it the crazy woman and her husband ... awkward :-)

Your wife sounds like a mean person; unless she is 6'5" is there any particular need? I wouldn't have enjoyed her sitting in front of me if I had the misfortune of being crammed into a Y seat. Nice to know you revel in the discomforture of others though.

She paid for a seat that reclined NUFF SAID

You could have this circular argument all day.
The person behind paid for the use of their tray table :)

Then that person needs to complain to the airline about the poor design - it's not the recliner's fault or problem.

I'm not talking fault here.
Just playing a bit of devils advocate and what could be argued.

The reasoning of "I can therefore I will" doesn't really cut the mustard.

Person behind can get up and down repeatedly and nudge the chair or hold onto it for stability. (very very annoying)
Yet I don't hear the same argument against that.

If said person is elderly or of poor balance it happens.

However I don't think the argument is simply "I can therefore I will." More along the lines of "I chose a seat with a recline, I find it more comfortable therefore I will. I won't do it during meal times as that makes eating near on impossible for the person behind, however outside of that if I feel the need I will."

Nope the recliners around here constantly say "it has a recline button therefore I can recline". Any suggestion of consideration of the other person is summarily dismissed. The OP here clearly said that their wife deliberately reclined fully after the hassle.

"Nope," are you 12?

That comment, in my experience, is not the recliners sole comment nor limited to the extent you presented.

Conversation moved on from the OP and the previous argument was presented. Between this and other threads (which were referred to but not quoted) have previously presented the line of thought that they attempt to use the recline function with consideration, ie they recline gradually and during non meal times.
