Hi

I am not familiar with ex-AUS prices and would appreciate some insights,

I will need to buy a round-trip from MEL/SYD to YUL for travel in December 2012.

Quickly looking up on ITA gives up prices in the 1900$AUD range. I know it's very early to book and I don't intend to book right now, but I am wondering how low can it get? When do sales usually come up?

Thank you

Which carrier is that?

That's a good price, significantly cheaper than QF would be, I would probably take it.

Depends when exactly in Dec for departure ... up to 09 Dec is low season ... after that it goes to high. As to when sales come up ... your guess is as good as anyones ... whenever the airline detects a drop in sales or needs to boost the cash flow or for any other esoteric reason. It operates much like a spot market ... you can hedge at a known price today or take your chances with the market price at the time. The general trend is however upward with fuel surcharge increase advices arriving daily. Holding seat(s) on preferred date/flight is worth considering in case plan "a" doesn't work out.
