A general cruise question, but might as well all it here.

A find of mine has just boarded Majestic Princess and had a little instant boiler/ coffee maker thing confiscated, apparently to protect the ships electrical system. Since been told this isn't uncommon.

I've only taken a couple of ocean cruises (Ponant, SilverSea) but have never heard of that.

Is it a general rule? If so, what is prohibited?

Yes, those sorts of things and especially irons are not welcome on cruise ships. Fire hazard is the main reason. Either directly, or yes potentially short the electrical system.

Cynics might say it so you have to use the ships laundry services….

This gives a full list, be aware that power boards with built in surge protector are not permitted

Thanks; that'll be handy.

I wonder if its just or mainly Princess that are strict about this? I'm pretty sure i carefully read everything for my first two first cruises on Ponant and SilverSea and didn't come across anything of the like. Certainly my surge-protected powerboard, which sat on the desks on both cruises were unchallenged.

I am really surprised about that. Surge protected power boards are not permitted by any cruise line. Normal boards are okay. It just shows that sometimes things slip through.

That's unusual. Surge protector boards haven't been allowed on several cruise lines I've been on.

There are some cruise lines that have tea making equipment in the cabin - Princess is not one but Ponant (your first cruise experience RF) did have a Nespresso machine when we were in Antarctica. Silversea didn't. Cunard has tea making (in fact we had a teapot and cups and saucers as well as mugs on QE last year). Not sure about other lines I have been on.
I remember a bit of a hooha when we were on Azamara in the Med - MrLtL bought a very ornate letter opener in Florence and it was a bit of a fight to get it through the ship's security when getting back on board. In the end he won and got to take it to the cabin.

On Princess your cabin steward will provide a ‘kettle’ if you ask for one.
