What on earth is QF doing?

Bizarre situations, but at the very least you did manage to get your desired outcome which is a small victory. Hope your holiday to Japan ends up being fun.

And in the further Miracle At Christmas, the new e-ticket has arrived, with all the flights correct and the connection CBR-SYD on QF1442.

I promise to update in my forthcoming TR about the now all but inevitable cancellation of QF1442 on our day of travel, whereupon we will be forced, last minute onto the offered alternative QF1506! Jinx, touch wood, cancel/delete etc....

If it were not for my millions of points, I would be looking for a new airline partner about now. And as I remarked to Mr Seat 0A this morning after my unsatisfactory session with South Africa, maybe I should just think of those as a sunk cost/opportunity because I never really seem to be able to get the flights I want as CR (eg there is never anything to/from Dubai) and I should shift alliances.
I didn’t have as many points, but I had a fair few. So when I largely gave up on Qantas about a year and a half ago, I’ve just used them for domestic flights. Not the best value, but like you I don’t like the stress of CR flights being stuffed around all the time and maybe cancelled and not being reinstated.

I did get a Virgin on Status Match a year ago and retained fairly easily, so still going strong with them.

Yes, this is what I am hoping for. I have QF LTG as a fall back, but I actually want the perks of Platinum for my overseas travels, which I now hope will be increasing!

Sorry, meant to ask, was this a published status match opportunity, or did you just write to them and ask for a status match?
Yes it was a general offer called 'switch-a-roo' targeting Qantas status holders. It’s discussed I think in the second half of the Virgin Discover gold promo thread.

thanks for that - I will just need to wait patiently until they run another one.

Given the current troubles and issues VA is having I wouldn't be surprised if they ran more. Incidentally even with status match, I'd probably look to use their partners.

Perhaps the best option is to see if there is a good Star Alliance status match option rather than VA for your long haul operations. Some people have suggested trying to match into Krisflyer when you book a J flight so you show some commitment to SQ.
