Doing a status run on Australia day and will have about 5 hour to burn between landing and departing. Having never been to PER before. I'm wondering what would be the best thing to do with my time?

Well if it's after 7.30pm, you could take off your shoes and join the groundstaff for a quiet beer on the pitch at the WACA...

Grab a rent a car and pop over to the Swan Valley for some Margaret River Chocolate and some wine from the various wineries!

Sit in the lounge and try and get an earlier flight home

Its PER Domestic, isnt' that how long it takes to get to the front of the queue into the lounge?
(it has been a couple of years since i've been to PER QC)

Catch a taxi from the Airport to Perth Train Station, take train down to Freo, get fish n chips by the wharf, I've also heard little creatures brewery in Freo is a good place to kill an hour or two at as well. (Very good beer :D)

It'll prob take an hour each way which will give a good couple of hours for a decent lunch \ dinner and still get back to the airport with time to spare.

Little Creatures do some great beers and ciders. Also the food is excellent and the atmosphere/staff very good. Well worth it.

I'd normally recommend a visit to Kings Park but that'll be chockers due to the Skyshow.

How long is a piece of string!?!?! Well in the case of Perth not very long.. :) So what time are you here from/to??? That would decide if you were here for the fireworks display which is always reasonable and then a short walk to to Burswood/Crown Perth maybe for a nice meal and a flutter on the pokies... If during the day then yes a taxi or hire car to the Swan Valley is doable or a taxi and train down to Fisherman's Harbour in freo for some nice seafood and/or a drink and walk around some nice older architecture... Trip up to King's Park with a few cold ones to look down over the city and the Swan River is always nice as well and then doable to catch some free transport down to The Lucky Shag right on the river and next to the Bell Tower is also an option... Would be so much easier if we had a train link from the airport...

Some good responses team.

I arrive at about 6pm and leave about 11:30pm.

I see that I posted in this in the wrong forum, perhaps more appropriate for the your questions forum? Or maybe this is travel news?? ;)

No, I think it's fine here, finding something to do in Perth for 5 hours would be news:!:

Okay, I'll stop

Since you're going to be there for dinner, that would be the obvious choice :)

Considering it's Australia Day I would avoid the city, the traffic will be horrendous. It's not the best time to be in or near the city, road closures will be in force everywhere.

Perhaps someone here can recommend a nice restaurant in the Eastern suburbs to attend, then head back to the airport.

Well the skyshow (if fireworks do it for you) would be the obvious choice and they start around 8ish don't they so enough time to get there... I live in Vic Park and its a fairly easy walk from my place (like 15/20 mins) down to the foreshore right next to the casino, you wouldn't bother driving your car down there... From there you can watch the fireworks and then as i said you could head to the casino, obviously better if you made a booking at, is it Neil Perry's Rockpool there, or the Atrium buffet??? Or you could walk back into Vic Park to the cafe strip, again you would want to make a booking (not sure if places might already be getting booked out?)... Could go to the Broken Hill Pub but of course it will probably be quite busy there and throughout the suburb... And then i would think it would be a piece of cake to get back out to the airport if you caught a taxi back out from around welshpool, only 30 minutes or so... I might be able to drop you somewhere if it made it easier...

Oxymoron ;)

(my emphasis).

Why not?

In typical fashion, I'll miss it by a matter of hours!

(Flying to ADL on Aus Day morning)

Yes, it did occur to me if what I was asking for was impossible...

I'm actually flying to PER via ADL from SYD.

Could do a do at the J lounge, or something as I'm flying on JASAs

Agree with Must Fly... J Lounge doesn't exist and QP quite ordinary.

Cab to Freo, Monk Cafe has excellent brewed-on-site beers, delicious food.

Time for a boat to Rottnest?

Sounds like a day in the life of a rig pig.....get chopper from rig to Truscott or Dili, get Metro from Truscott or Dili to Darwin arrive 1030ish sober, ask for & receive exit row seats on checkin then proceed to Fannie Bay Ale House, Qantas Club or DRW Airport Resort & get smashed with your mates trying to make up for the last 21 days you haven't had access to alchohol.

Turn up a boarding gate when flight is in final stages of boarding, draw attention to self by losing boarding pass, get onboard then sit in wrong seat then 'joke' with F/A about your mate being with Al Quaeda when she's asking you to sit in correct seat. CSM come to investigate but she doesn't see funny side of 'joke' either.

Plane departs with two less pax & bags, ticket cancelled by company who send you a pink slip in the mail which is self explanatory. Plenty of spare time now to update resume, then there's small matter of telling the Missus.
