What to do in PER for 5 hours

Sounds like a day in the life of a rig pig.....get chopper from rig to Truscott or Dili, get Metro from Truscott or Dili to Darwin arrive 1030ish sober, ask for & receive exit row seats on checkin then proceed to Fannie Bay Ale House, Qantas Club or DRW Airport Resort & get smashed with your mates trying to make up for the last 21 days you haven't had access to alchohol.

Turn up a boarding gate when flight is in final stages of boarding, draw attention to self by losing boarding pass, get onboard then sit in wrong seat then 'joke' with F/A about your mate being with Al Quaeda when she's asking you to sit in correct seat. CSM come to investigate but she doesn't see funny side of 'joke' either.

Plane departs with two less pax & bags, ticket cancelled by company who send you a pink slip in the mail which is self explanatory. Plenty of spare time now to update resume, then there's small matter of telling the Missus.

Was that a story about you? Or "a friend"?

:-)

First reiteration, avoid the city unless you want to watch the Skyshow.

Both Nobu and Rockpool have opened at the Burswood Casino so if you can get in there's an option for the evening (dine and gamble!).

Can also recommend the Margaret River Chocolate Company in the Swan Valley. Their dark chocolate honeycomb is great. Just down the road from it is the Duckstein Brewery, a few good ales their. A few decent restaurants in the vicinity as well. All east of the city so Skyshow traffic won't be an issue.

Hire a car and go for a drive down to Freo.

Go to Muz Buz and get a latte and then go to Kings Park

It is a big public holiday in Perth so I think the Burswood Casino and all the dining options are good ideas seeing it is close to the Perth airport.

Casino would only be about 15 mins from the airport.

Cheap cab fare and then go back to the lounge and join the fluro brigade.

I would agree with the above go to Burswood Casino maybe Rockpool keeping with the QF theme ?
I'm not a local obviously but a somewhat frequent visitor to Perth.
It's a pretty ordinary drive from the airport to the CBD and with Australia Day I would give it a miss.

Of course getting a cab from the city to the airport post fireworks is going to take you >2 hrs... (Perth has something of an issue of cabs being like freaking hens teeth the few times they are really needed)

If I was a rigpig (heaven forbid) I would be the only one drinking a skinny latte. I didn't know them & was just a humble bystander. :p The pm DRW/PER flight had got itself a bit of a reputation, so much so that some CSM's demanded AFP oversee the boarding of that flight.

Colleagues of these guys who flew out a couple of days later filled in the missing bits of the puzzle.

Ohhh right ya.

So I might give Burswood a go then, since it seems accessible from the airport. Hopefully I can win the cost of my trip back! ;)

I can't guarantee it, but seeing the skyshow ends at 8.30pm and you might be heading back to the airport about 10-10.30pm from Burswood (where plenty of taxis should be going to/from) I would think it shouldn't take too long to get a taxi after most of the skyshow crowds have dispersed and then have a pretty clear 15 minute drive to the airport... You could always ask the Burswood people on arrival what they think about trying to reserve a taxi etc or other options... But unless there are a lot of people out on the town because they are taking the friday off I don't think you should have too much of a problem???

Don't know if anyone here has been to the burswood lately, but they are building extensions and the traffic situation is pretty mediocre.

Hopefully you manage ok elbarto :)

Doing a status run on Australia day and will have about 5 hour to burn between landing and departing. Having never been to PER before. I'm wondering what would be the best thing to do with my time?

Sent from my iPhone

Head out to Elmars in the Swan Valley for some great German food and really good beer.
