What to do with your QFF points during the COVID-19 travel slump?

I'm keeping an eye out on the QAN share price. If it looks like they could go under I'm tempted to convert to vouchers.

Famous last words, but I think the strategic importance of having an airline would mean the Cth Govt would not allow it to go under. On the other hand, I am looking at whether to convert 120k Velocity points into Kris Flyer...

When AJ went cap in hand to Abbott in 2011, the answer was a firm 'no'.

I appreciate circumstances are different today, but I don't think that it is entirely the case that a bailout would be granted no questions asked.

That's because Abbott and Hockey tried to run a principled conservative economic policy. When they were torn down by Turnbull the Coalition went full on to appeasement mode so I think a request today would be treated more favourably - they have already announced a waiver and refund of various airport taxes etc.

Just a thought and not sure if anyone has mentioned this but what if this goes on for 18 months and we can't fly. (I can't because no Qantas flights in NZ and don't know if Jetstar counts). Willwe losse all our points?

They might. Exist that is.. but simply be devalued. Much like anything that exists as a virtual entity without any real backing behind it other than faith I suppose.

I'd guess that people redeeming points is actually helping QAN in a way by reducing the QFF points liability on the books and creating revenue.. It'd be interesting to see the next detailed QAN market update as it may be red ink in every division except QFF..

Yes, but I meant more, regulation and processes. i.e there is an RBA for australian currency and some transparency and independence (RBA governor).

QAN treasury is presumably the RBA equivalent for QFF and they don't have to tell you very much at all (beyond regulatory filings)

It's not a criticism of QFF in any way, it's simply an observation of the rise of alternate currencies and what actually 'stands' behind them. In the AUD case there's a whole diversified economy ($2 trillion). In QFF's case there is QAN (all $8.4b of it) which just had its market cap drop by more than ~70%.

I'd still buy QFF points if people were selling (at a great rate) even though i rarely fly QAN now

I wonder how Mr. Hockey would describe interest rates at 0.25%, given that he thought 3.5% was "emergency rates"? We live in very interesting times. And it looks like we are going to bail out VA which is almost completely owned by foreign airlines.

Remember that the whole QFF loyalty scheme aids marketing, branding and money making through increased sales. It wouldn't exist if 14 million members equated to a constant loss of $$$ through 14 million complimentary flights. So, yes, I think they'll still keep it but there will come a time in the future when you'll look back on recent QFF point valuations and wonder how they were ever so generous in 2019 and early 2020.

When international travel takes off (see what I did there) again, I want to be in a good position to snap up rewards and cheap flights to explore the world free of other tourists, therefore, my plan is to hold onto my points, and/or probably add to them.

Depending on what happens with a potential lockdown in this country, I might also start exploring domestically again. Local businesses need support!

5+ Years I have been rolling credit cards including 355k points accumulated this year to have over a 850k points saving up for a once in a lifetime First RTW Trip.. Denying myself any chance to spend points opting for cash instead. Well fear got the best of me and as i wake up from what seems like a drunken stupor (funnily enough a Wine free night) with only 16000 points left in my account.

What did i buy? Value.. I needed good value for my points and 0.4c per point wouldn't cut it
An Iphone for 370k when i can pick up one for 1500.. No. A TV for 450k which is worth under 2k at JB? No...

It started small and came with a nice buzz.. Including my Points Plus an extra 10% off really gave it that extra kick..

I looked this up. As you say, $3000+ online. But in the Qantas store, I tried using the slider for points plus pay - it lands on 2000 points and $2532 payment. And you get 5065 points back from your spend!

Who says the Qantas store is poor value?
