As you know. Lindsay Wilson, Markis10 and I spent a few days in DXB last week.

We were chatting with Alan Joyce about the safety videos Qantas uses. I mentioned that I didn't really like the current one and I hated the cricket one. (If you were sitting in a seat without an IFE screen, the "Hello, Captain, hello, captain" was completely meaningless)

So, anyhow, Alan asked me what I would like to see in a safety video. I gave him a few ideas but it got me thinking.

What would YOU like to see? Let's get some ideas going.

I'm going to give some feedback to AJ, and who knows. Maybe your idea will make it onto the next video.

i will credit any idea I give to Qantas, to the person who came up with it.

Just the facts. Humour is very personal and what works for me will grate on others and vice versa.

However, have slightly different versions, maybe different people so you look to see who it is and watch rather than just tune out.

Wonder if it would be worth having RdC doing part of the video for the A380? He's very well known and it might add some gravitas to the message.

To continue that theme have crew doing the message from a specific aircraft type, they know the specifics of their aircraft and if there is a subtle difference between aircraft that needs mentioning for that type of aircraft (not variation) then they will ensure it is mentioned.

With type specific videos it would increase the chance of seeing the crew member involved which may also enhance the message.

At the moment, the video is ok IMO (better than the cricket one).

Having said that, perhaps have more than one speaker in the video (eg a few different 'passengers' throughout). In that light, it's also possible that they could be shown on camera while speaking - as it would serve to draw the attention of less-frequent travellers (ie "oooh something is going on, I should watch" and "hey, there's someone else")... sounds a little silly when written like that, but when compared to the current narrator, it could achieve that very purpose. For example, the current "today, you're flying on a Qantas Boeing 767" narrator generally speaks in the same way throughout the whole video, and I don't think I've ever seen her face. Replacing that with say, 3 people, gives 3 different speaking styles, and sounds much less "drone-like". This would help to hold the passengers' attention for longer, and as they start to get bored, someone new comes along to recapture their focus.

Avoiding any cringe-worthy jokes would also make the video tolerable to FFs, and hopefully not encourage the crew to turn it off before it was finished! :)

And then, there's always the option of a video featuring some AFFers (lol) ;) Not taking credit for this idea though - I've seen it written on the forum somewhere in the past :p haha

Let me think if I can think of things I would like to see... but in the mean time, things to watch out for:

Agree with Hvr about humour. Unless it is really, really good, it just doesn't work. Some that I've seen (even NZ) are just cringe-worthy.

Also patronizing phrases like "we know you all know how to put on a seat belt"... VX was terrible in that regard.. their comment was even more negative... "for the zero point zero zero zero one percent of you out there who don't know how to put on a seat belt...". I was somewhat aghast that they would be so patronizing. The writers need to sit back and think about what they are writing.

I think they should just stick to the message and deliver it as quickly and thoroughly as necessary to get the safety message across. Of course, it's important that they try to capture the attention of those (who may not have seen it before), but even then, trying to jazz it up may not be the way.

The current one reminds me of the AA one I saw back in September last year, though AA's had way more people, cutting to a new person every sentence (even mid-sentence I'm sure). It was nice to see the range of staff all in their different roles, but it was just way too disjointed and disconnected.

I actually like the new one. Having Qantas staff do the demo is great IMO. The only thing i didn't like was the voice over.. sounded to robotic. But the video is clean and straight to the point. I do miss the JT intro though, it was so well delivered.

I might put my thinking cap on.. Problem with doing theme demos is they date (olympics, Bear Gryls etc) so you need to turn them over faster than a generic one.

Of course on the next one I think the passengers should be AFF members :p.

I think the Safety demo now is part of the branding of the airline.
ANZ has the best, IMHO, being a little quirky, a little tongue in cheek, and contemporary... consistent with my experience with ANZ itself.

QF have to have a theme therefore consistent with there branding, and that's where the cricket video didn't strike a chord - it's quite lame in fact.

Maybe one where everyone isn't so perfect? I think sportsmen make dreadful actors, they should stick to their core profession, on the oval.

I'd take notice of one which had John Cleese, Mr Bean, or Billy Connolly. I'm betting the budget wont stretch to that but it would make (many) people actually listen for a change.

Could I make one definite suggestion though - NOT EDDIE EVERYWHERE! I think I'd actually be moved to Boo and Hiss!

The shorter and more concise, the better. It should be like a cover letter on a CV - grab you and feed you the key info in one page (short and to the point). Less fanfare, less humour.

Mr Bean is to me a repulsive character and an instant turn off. Any video with him means I instantly hate it and I'll never hear the message.

That's a shame. But I did say many people, not all people. I turn off now, so....

I'm quite liking the current one. It's great to have a range of different speakers talking about the procedures. And I like seeing different locations like the F lounge. It definitely keeps it less "drone-like" as ChrisCh mentioned. I've noticed that it keeps people looking at the screen a bit more.

It's been a while since getting on a QF aircraft, the last one I saw was the cricket one, and a bit cringeworthy, and certainly think it misses the mark for passengers from places other than the Commonwealth (China, Japan, US, etc..). One of the best features I think is a summary/checklist before launching into the full video. It was really good reminder for those frequent flyers - who don't for whatever reason - listen to the full video. Do they still have that checklist?

Something that's concise and doesn't drag on especially with the coughpy music they use sometimes. I don't think they safety video should be used as a marketing opportunity.

I quite like the current one. The video should be informative yet play to the strengths of the airline. I believe the people at QF are the big difference - as such they should play a big role in the safety video which is the most important element of the flight.
