What would you like to see on the new IFE System?

Each to their own though, but charging for extras is a LCC legacy..

Well, I wouldn't call charging for food LCC, only the most premium carriers offer food included. AA doesn’t, aren't they full service?

There is a large gap between full service and LCC, DJ are fitting somewhere in the middle. I wouldn't expect food on an El cheap fare on Virgin. Maybe they'll offer Tea, Coffee, Water? That could work.

VX allow you to order Tea, Coffee, Water, Soft drink and Juices using their IFE. And even on 90min flights, I saw it working quite well. You just don't go a cart run, and with payment out of the way (Since they pay via the IFE), they just bring it to you as you order.

It makes getting around the cabin much easier too, as there isn't a cart hogging up the isle. I would love to see RED setup on Virgin Australia planes similar to the way that VX have it set up.

But here lies the problem... a cashless cabin would not work on Virgin Australia.

American's can't live without a Credit Card - Australian's can. About 70% of purchases are still made with cash on Virgin Australia. Tiger Airways tried a cashless cabin, and it failed miserably, with the Flight Attendants taking cash and paying with their personal credit cards. The whole VX RED system works around a cashless cabin, which doesn’t work in Australia.

The RED system can work quite will with the Live2Air we currently have, VX in America use it for live TV. The way their flights work...

Live TV, Music and 2 or 3 popular TV shows, games and other random stuff - Free
TV Shows and Movies - $2-3 each.

I would really like to see this in Australia, but I highly doubt we will. Cashless Cabin's don't work in Australia.

I'd say 80-90% of people on flights I take, people will take something off the trolley. I think it would get messy for Virgin trying to work out free meals and hand them out and people buying stuff..

You'll find it varies a lot depending on the routes, OOL-SYD everybody purchases something off the cart. Capital city runs you'll find there is a lot of flexi meals and very little purchases of the cart. SYD-CBR there is usually 60-80 flexi meals.

On a route like SYD-DPS everybody wants to buy half the card. It usually takes 2-3 hours for two carts to do a run. On a 737! That is a lot of food, very nice commission for the FAs.

If money wasn’t an abject, the next version of RED, as a launch customer or similar, would be perfect, as I’m sure it’d have all you have mentioned there.

I’d have thought if V Australia eventually becomes Virgin Australia then having some commonality would be appropriate, but who knows.

Gate-to-gate would be something I’d be interested in as a feature. And if possible/if economy pax were to be charged for content, having the ability for certain frequent flyers (Silver/Gold +) to swipe their card and get free content would be a nice touch.

AVOD with a selection of complimentary TV/ Music/ Games. I would be happy to have a good selection of current, new release PPV movies for a reasonable price also.
Seatback power is a must IMO though. At the very least I would hope for a usb port for the numerous iThings people carry around.

Maybe if I'm being very optimistic, I would love the ability to access my iPhone content over the USB for playback on the AVOD screen.

Definitely would like seat back

And also agree with how good VX was, it was the perfect mix in my opinion and did include live TV, only new releases were charged.

This is how American Airlines is doing it from today.

I would imagine that given the IFE change-over delays at both DJ & JQ, the (behind-the-scenes) race is on to see who will be first to market here.

I think that we can expect to see something similar, very soon on (part-Branson-owned) Air Asia X.

Seat back ordering on food and drink please.

Has anyone tried htis on Virgin America? ISTR that you can order from your seat and then it gets delivered. You pay at your seat with your credit card. Surely this would be a good way to go for Virgin Aus and if they're installing individual seat back equipment it could be rolled into that.

How well does it work? It would also allow those seated in "F+B compimentary" to be given a one-time passcode to use when they do their OLCI or booking that could be entered.

There could be a really slick solution to all of this (entertainment, food and beverage etc) if VA get it right......

.

Has nobody else noticed the picture in the latest V-News...............

Sorry for being grainy....I blew it up

Ahmmmmm. If I'm right, that's V Australia's Premium Economy on the 777.

It also looks similar to Virgin America.

Yep thats PE on V Australia

Yep, I know.........but are they just being lazy using a photo of V Oz with the Virgin Australia text above (V Oz aren't yet Virgin Australia), or are they embarrassed to use a photo of the real seating arrangement, or is there a subliminal message to us? ;)

That's one of the first premium-esque, appealing photos of a DJ aircraft interior (a la SQ, QF) that has ever been taken and was posted on the V Australia Facebook page a while ago. Granted, it has nothing to do with domestic flights, but I guess they have to include something since LTA is on its way out. Bring on new IFE!

More and more likely to be the red system :D

Based on what ?

I am pleased RED is going on the A330's but really don't know why the delay on the 737's

Every refitted/new 737 that rolls out means that RED or a proper IFE solution is less and less likely

They would have quite a bit of work to re-fit the planes AGAIN with IFE

What he said :!:

Agreed, every one of those 737s that rolls out with new seats put another nail in the RED coffin...

What Virgin Australia need to do is buy a whole heap of those Windows running tablets (they aren't really big sellers anyway, I'm sure they could get them cheap) ... then they could buy the system that I built and use that  Problem solved

You obviously do not follow the forums that much...

After reading up info on the recent IFE conference in the US. It seems Virgin RED Entertainment system Mark II is not far away from being released.

Will be interesting to see if this makes an appearance on either the Long Haul (777) or Short Haul (737/330) fleet.
