Each to their own though, but charging for extras is a LCC legacy..
Well, I wouldn't call charging for food LCC, only the most premium carriers offer food included. AA doesn’t, aren't they full service?
There is a large gap between full service and LCC, DJ are fitting somewhere in the middle. I wouldn't expect food on an El cheap fare on Virgin. Maybe they'll offer Tea, Coffee, Water? That could work.
VX allow you to order Tea, Coffee, Water, Soft drink and Juices using their IFE. And even on 90min flights, I saw it working quite well. You just don't go a cart run, and with payment out of the way (Since they pay via the IFE), they just bring it to you as you order.
It makes getting around the cabin much easier too, as there isn't a cart hogging up the isle. I would love to see RED setup on Virgin Australia planes similar to the way that VX have it set up.
But here lies the problem... a cashless cabin would not work on Virgin Australia.
American's can't live without a Credit Card - Australian's can. About 70% of purchases are still made with cash on Virgin Australia. Tiger Airways tried a cashless cabin, and it failed miserably, with the Flight Attendants taking cash and paying with their personal credit cards. The whole VX RED system works around a cashless cabin, which doesn’t work in Australia.
The RED system can work quite will with the Live2Air we currently have, VX in America use it for live TV. The way their flights work...
Live TV, Music and 2 or 3 popular TV shows, games and other random stuff - Free
TV Shows and Movies - $2-3 each.
I would really like to see this in Australia, but I highly doubt we will. Cashless Cabin's don't work in Australia.
I'd say 80-90% of people on flights I take, people will take something off the trolley. I think it would get messy for Virgin trying to work out free meals and hand them out and people buying stuff..
You'll find it varies a lot depending on the routes, OOL-SYD everybody purchases something off the cart. Capital city runs you'll find there is a lot of flexi meals and very little purchases of the cart. SYD-CBR there is usually 60-80 flexi meals.
On a route like SYD-DPS everybody wants to buy half the card. It usually takes 2-3 hours for two carts to do a run. On a 737! That is a lot of food, very nice commission for the FAs.
