Amex is about the only one that gives you 1:1 or 1.5:1 (1.5 points per $ on plat cards)... but not as widely accepted.

Thanks Nlagalle what do you think of the Westpac card?

Also whats a good card for my sister who is studying and doing an accounting cadetship? Spend about $2500 per month? She doesnt want one with high fees.

Are there any current great offers to earn extra points?

Thanks

Raz

Hi,

I was hoping to get more responses to my post. Pls share your research.

Pls your thoughts on a great CC with freq flyer points so I can move from ANZ platinum. Something with lower fees pls

1. NAB?
2 Westpac?
3. Amex?
4. Anything else?

Thanks

You'd be hard pressed to find the "perfect card" in the current economic climate. Maybe a year, or a couple of years ago, the fee-free Citibank Gold would have been the best deal around, but that's long gone, and it's even harder now with the whole Qantas direct sweep business.

Personally, because I have the fee-free Citibank Gold, I'd seriously consider the Amex Platinum Credit Card as a second card, but the problem is the crazy annual fee.

Again, if weren't for the ridiculous annual fee, I'd be all over the Westpac Altitude Platinum... 1.5/$1 Amex and a Visa/Mastercard for those places which don't take Amex. On a whim, I gave them a call to see whether they would offer it to me either fee-free, or at least with a significant discount, since I also have my mortgage with them, but they said no (but I can get the Altitude Gold fee free... but the perks aren't as good, so no point in changing).

Just keep watching and waiting for a good deal, mate. I'm sure you'll hear about it here as soon as anything appears.

Well depends on your negotiation skill etc... you can basically get platinum for free... Or at least for certain companies.

All my current platinum cards (NAB, AMEX, CBA) are free - after 15-20 talk on the phone... And instantly they all become great cards for point...

Ooh... I'd be interested in hearing a bit more about this! What exactly do you need to do to "persuade" them (besides threatening to go elsewhere)?

I use different tactics for different banks... Make up lots of reasonable unpleasant experiences.....then threaten them... Amex is a tough one... but I love their coughpy customer service team which strengthen my argument (always make mistakes and not calling back...)

But then please be aware that it can only work if you have a marginally benefit to them to keep your account... Eg. Revolver (Not Transactor) / Loans with them / a chunk of rubbish cash accounts (Earning cough interest) / High monthly transactions...

The simple way to determine your successful chance:
If they generate an income of $300 from you (Without Annual fee) and waive the $300 Annual, they are making a loss (As reward etc kicks in)...so they will rather close your account.

Your strategy sounds vv interesting... can you pls giv an example of " lots of reasonable unpleasant experiences??"

Gonna try tomorrow

It really comes down to your own experience... in which way that you are not satisfy with the current product...be realistic and reasonable. CBA is hard unless they really think they messed it up.
