If i get a T-Mobile SIM from someone like Telaway - does it matter what phone I have? I have an iPhone 6s.

We bought sims at Target. I use an ageing iPhone 5 and my mum use iPhone 6s; both worked sans problem. I even got 4G and LTE whereas I never get it in Sydney :-|

Have a look at my post on mobile phone frequencies now somewhere on page 2 - it lists most flagship phones and their frequencies for AU, US and EU.

I am thinking prepaid SIMS my be on the way out to some extent.

This year I have stopped worrying about getting SIMS; juggling two phones, using my trusty Dual Sim Android etc.

Being with Virgin Mobile and for the last few trips I have simply used their Data Roaming add on. That way I keep my normal number available for texts etc.

It's for specific countries (20 or so) and is a 30 day deal.

300MB for $25, 500MB for $30, $55 for 1GB and more. With so much wifi around these days, 300MB is fine for me for a week in the USA - the 1GB would keep me going for the 30 days.

Note, calls are not included - I just use Skype with the data pack ...

(Note that if you are on a $60+ per month plan, you get 500MB automatically included for 12 months.)

Anyone looking for a good deal on SIM Cards for the USA, this deal popped up today in my inbox for T-Mobile service:

Travel

$30, $45, and $85 deals depending if you need to call mobiles in Australia or not.

Given those prices I used my Flexiroam SIM for last trip to the US.
1GB is US$30 (plus US$15 for 1-yr subscription and postage).
Some codes to get 700MB free in the referral offers section - see http://www.australianfrequentflyer.com.au/community/referral-offers/flexiroam-x-77437.html

I'm also with Virgin - tried this when I went to NZ for a weekend. Activated the pack on the Wednesday before, arrived in Auckland on the Friday to find it didn't work, it kept not working until the Sunday afternoon about an hour before I left for the airport again. Made it difficult as I'm directionally challenged and couldn't use google maps! Needless to say, won't be trying this option again (and Virgin to their credit refunded my money)

Traveling at present in the US and Canada and I got the Telstra travel pack at $10 per day and I must say it was very handy albeit not the most economical deal. No connection problems at all.

What Service provider do you use?

What to you wish to do? Movies? Post photos?

These days, as I am with Virgin Mobile, I just pay $30 for 500Mbyte for 30 days ... with all the free WiFi around these days, I rarely use half ...

Just wish to use maps all in the city, emails, no movies, unlimited local calls, sms back to Aus. Used to use TravelSimsDirect. Only use iinet in Aus.

I'll look up SimCorner too - thanks.

That's too expensive for my taste for 30 days. :)

have used H20 when in US for a few weeks last November. I paid more then the actual website, as I went through an airport shop selling sim cards.

- unlimited calls to 50 countries (land lines)
- Calls to overseas drop out at exactly 1 hour, but just dial again (free still). Served us well, as we needed to contact some Aussie businesses!
- wifi/internet: depending on size/plan, no excess data, speed just slows down.

Thanks, would 3GB be enough for 30 days of maps and maybe emails? Hotel has wifi for the ipda min otherwise.

It is difficult to advise you as everyone has different requirements. Many people also have their favourite sim options.

But for a month, 3 GB for normal use would be fine. Emails on hotel wifi if you have a lot and the mobile data for the day to day stuff..

Something to use as a guide.. What is your current mobile data plan here is AUS ? Do you use it all ?

Its the things like movies, instagram, facebook and apps etc etc that chew plenty of data.

Having said that, we all have our own versions of " normal use "

That's a good question. I use almost no phone data here as I always know where I'm going, and work from the home office. So, it seems as if 3/5/7 GB will be fine. I'll look up those plans suggested. I like to have the ph number before leaving here to give to people, and now it seems as if I may need to put it in my QF bkg. too for 2 factor authentication.

Yeah, no FB or all that carp.
