The reason I ask is I have the Qantas American Express Ultimate Card, which comes with a free flight, but to use that flight I have to first buy a Qantas product (WTF!) - any kind and any price.

A $5.95 keychain from the QF store!
I don't believe so. It's quite specific merchant accounts that enable the free flight. I once claimed an award and paid for a Carbon Offset, which did not activate it (offset the carbon after the ticket was issued, not at time of purchase).Does that actually count though?

Selected Qantas products and services are Qantas passenger flights (with a QF flight number) purchased on the Qantas merchant account i.e. directly from Qantas and Qantas Frequent Flyer and Qantas Club membership joining and annual fees. Excludes Jetstar, Qantas Holidays and Qantas branded non-airfare products. Subject to the Qantas American Express Cards Points Terms and Conditions.
