The rules state that you need to have an onward flight with QF/JQ/etc that day. So I would presume that you can enter the lounge as early as 6am (or whenever it opens) if you really wanted to.Didn't want to start a new thread, so I may as well ask here.
I have a 6.05pm MEL-BNE J flight with QF (award booking) on Fri 17 June..
What's the earliest I will be permitted to enter the J Lounge?

Don't get there too early as you may be denied boarding for your flight if you have been in the lounge for too long. Thanks for the responses. Looks like I will be getting there a little bit earlier than normal

They don't check your flight status generally, just flash your card and walk straight through.

Actually, it's now 'must be travelling the same day' not onward.
So long as you are or have travelled on a flight, you're good to go.
