I got offered an invol bump when I lived in the US. I was flying from Toronto to Baltimore and got offered a voucher for a free flight anywhere in the US within a year. I couldn't take it because girlfriend vaccav was already on the way to the airport.

I think this practice occurs much much more in the US.

Might it not be worth checking in online for your flight on AA. AA OLCI opens ,iirc, at 30 hours and you can print your BP

As this is my 100th post (finally limped my way to Posting Freak status), I'm excited to announce that I have finally recruited my first AA Candy Stealing apprentice. Currently walking him through the Plat Challenge.

I tried to recruit another colleague, but I couldn't convince him - he just didn't "get it". Clearly he lacks The Right Stuff. I have high hopes for my new apprentice, though.

If you were "offered" then it is not involuntary. An offer makes it a voluntary bump. As mentioned previously, vouchers are paid for voluntary bumps, but cash is the payment required by the US authorities for involuntary bumps.

Now, many airlines will try to make you think its invol or that ever for invol they can pay with a voucher. But the form they make you sign will make it a voluntary bump and that way they don't have to report it as an IDB (Involuntary Denied Boarding).

Bumped a few hours off Qantas Australia - New Zealand flight

I got bumped off a Qantas flight Sydney-Auckland, i think it was a 2 or 3 hour delay to the next flight.

They told me it was unusual for NZ flights to be full, apparently everyone turned up and I had to wait for the next flight. All they offered me was seating in the Qantas Lounge and to phone anyone I needed. They weren't too efficient as it took them 3 staff and 30 min to put me on the next flight and write a voucher for me to enter the lounge. I wasn't happy about it as I didn't get to my hotel until 1am the next day.

Has anyone here been bumped to a flight just a few hours later? What compensation can be expected (from a legal perspective) and what offers/demands have people made?

From a legal perspective I don't think you have any right to compensation. I don't think many countries have statutory compensation rights outside of the European Union

My best compensation was for an oversold BOS-LHR flight where I was offered USD1000 vouchers plus was upgraded to 1st class on a later flight
