For those who live/work in Canberra, you'll know that the city is running a "Like Canberra" campaign at the moment where people are asked to vote on their favourite things about the capital city.

So, I was wondering what other AFFer's favourite things about CBR are?

My favourite is the airport, because, as well as it being rather nice, it's the gateway to leaving the city. ;)

Outsider Cafe at Captain's Flat. Sure, it's 50km away, but Gunther's art and Christine's feeds are awesome.

Question time in parliament. Best free comedy show in town.

The friends that I have there.

Besides that, I do not miss the place.

Ah, Canberra; hated it for the first two years, love it now. My favourite things? The city framed in a ring of blue hills, the bracing winters cast out against summer-like blue skies, and the dry heat with cool nights. It's such a convenient and liveable city. I wouldn't leave.

I love leaving CBR!

Really... the CBR QF lounges are the best domestic QF lounges in Australia!

War Memorial, National Gallery, the Hyatt, Silo Bakery & friends living in Canberra.

The lounges are very good in CBR plus I always enjoy the War Memorial.

War Memorial first and foremost. It's an incredibly emotional place to visit.

Both Parliament houses are worth a look too.

Great place to bring up a family. No queues. Get anywhere in 20 minutes. Only 20 mins of peak hour. Mocan and Green Grout. New age Braddon with LSR x2. Lanterne Rooms. The Hyatt. Bike paths. The lakes. And if you do need to escape, only 3 hours to Sydney.

Oh, and of course great place to live to get SCs as you have to fly somewhere else to leave the country!!!!

I lived in CBR for 2 years and often go back for visits. I think Canberra is a great city. Highlights include New Acton precinct (Diamant Hotel is a pick), Commonwealth Park (esp. Floriade), the Balloon Festival in March (is this still happening?), Silo Bakery in Kingston, Tilleys Devine in Lyneham, NGA and the foreshore precint generally.

Breakfast at Dobinson's on Budna Street followed by a take away banana caramel tart for later.

The parliamentry triangle is great. I remember a display at Old Parliament House featuring dresses worn by PM's wives. Lady Sonia McMahon's dress was on display and isn't that revealing.

The Australian War Memorial is always worth visiting.

As an escapee from CBR there are very few things I miss but the cool evenings are one of them. The QF J lounge is good as are the staff. It is small enough that they get to know you.

Sammy's Kitchen in Bunda st is quite nice with friends.

My experience with Sammy's was really good food but as soon as you have finished eating is you are out the door, table is cleaned and the next group seated. Went with workmates once and one BYO'd an open cask of wine! We were embarrassed but at least she'd left the bag in the box!!!!

I love living in Canberra but I've lived here all my life so I may be biased. Quiet, easy to get around (by car), beautiful Autumn foliage, best RSPCA in Australia (again, I may be biased). I get my full on big city fix once a year when we go to NYC, and I love it but a couple of weeks is enough!

When I was going to Sydney each weekend for a couple of months to pack up my mother's house to sell it, it really brought home to me how much more pleasant and easy living in Canberra is. And that was despite the fact that our own house was undergoing major renovations during the same period (e.g., no kitchen for two months).

Agree w' all the positive things above. Also, people can afford a lovely place to live in CBR. Not so in say SYD where I lived for many years and go back to frequently. Now, I find SYD frazzling, and love to get home again.

The War Memorial and the view from Mount Ainslie for me. And when leaving, the QF lounges are terrific (haven't used them during peak periods yet though).
