Really? Good non-Apple products exist? Say it isn't so Joe!
Given the frequency with which I recommend Apple products to people, I tend to worry about my advice being dismissed out of hand as biased, so I do try at least to appear to be as even-handed as possible.
Seriously a bigger concern would be the amount of time it will take to copy your CDs to your computer (whether you buy a good MP3 or a non-apple MP3

). It isn't a quick process.
Absolutely - a CD takes a few minutes to rip (up to, but usually less than, 10 minutes for longer disks on slower machines) - so while a handful of discs can be loaded onto your computer in one session, if you're loading your whole collection (say 20+), it's going to take a few days / weeks to get it all on there. But you can get started on this straight away by installing iTunes and copying your CDs to your computer even before you get an iPod / other MP3 player.
FWIW, the first time I did it I had to get through about 200 odd CDs - going through several discs in the background while I was working, it still took me a couple of weeks.
Thanks to all your suggestions so far.
The thing with the iphone is then I would be up for rental thru a provider?????, whereas once I buy the ipod touch that is all I am up for?????
Is that correct?
As you can tell I am not too savvy with mp 3 players.
I don't think i would be bothered with itue cards & so forth.
Any good alternatives to the ipod touch?
Thanks again
There are various many ways to buy an iPhone - either get it subsidised on a plan with your telco (in which case you either pay an upfront fee or pay it off in instalments over the course of your contract) or buy it outright from Apple. The former is cheaper (sometimes even free), but does lock you in to paying for the telco's service plan for up to two years, while the latter is more expensive but gives you complete freedom to use your iPhone on any telco on whatever plan you choose. It really depends on what your own phone uses / monthly budget is - happy to suggest ideas if you are willing to share that info.
Again, there are alternatives to the iPod Touch (the most obvious one being the Zune HD, which is not available in Australia), but assuming you are not a micromanager of content on your computer, then it would be difficult to recommend the others - at least with an iPod, you have iTunes to take care of all the heavy lifting for you.
