When do J upgrades confirm???

Hi ya'll,

I am on QF 93 tomorrow (21 Dec) and have requested an upgrade Y->J... I am traveling solo and am plat.
So.... there are at least 9 unsold seats in both J and PE, yet it is T-18 and I haven't been upgraded yet...... which is unusual as it normally happens about T-24

Are there that many P1 or CL pax that I don't get a look in? Or are they playing another game?? Do they think there will be a last minute rush of bogans to Disneyland for xmas? What gives QF???? God it is moments like these I HATE you. At least other airlines like AA show you how many people are listed and where you are in the queue.... QF holds these cards so close as if they were nuclear secrets..... probably holding seats in case there is a last minute wedding dress shopping trip to Rodeo Dr.... wow that was coughy but I am cranky

Did you select the option to accept the upgrade at the gate? If so you may get the lucky beep upon boarding.

It looks good BUT I wonder if QF may be holding out a bit longer in case of any 380 issues on other flights.

Anyway if it clears it clears.. iEF onlytells part of the story.

Also note the P1 and CL's would have been upgraded already if any seats were opened (likely).

EF shows you inventory for sale - same as a travel agent. I just called my mate at flight centre and he says that he sees the same inventory - at least 9 seats in J and PE for sale on QF93 tomorrow. And 2 in F - surely there are people listed for an upgrade to F???

I agree - they are probably holding seats in case some of their other birds die at the last moment. Or maybe holding for staff.... the certainly prefer staff over revenue pax in my experience....

I do a lot of runs to the UK on QF1/2, and put in for upgrades from Flex Y to J - I don't bother with the PE option as I can't sleep sitting up. More than a few times it's been less than 24 hours before I get the happy or sad SMS regarding my fate. Once the message didn't come in, I just noticed my poinits balance had gone down.

Chill - don't you realise that it's just a movie and not real... At least that's what MrsK tell me when I'm yelling at the screen about plot lines in Star Wars
And I really hope your upgrade comes through, I know that feeling of joy or sadness, which I'm about to go through in a week or so

I reckon you're worrying overly much. This is a high demand time of year. They won't seel them all, but something else could (potentially) be going on.

I am sure the upgrade will clear. No need to panic.

This is just a guess, but the aircraft operating QF93 tomorrow is a refurbished one so this may be why there are all of a sudden more seats, even after upgrades are processed on the system (24 hours). That, or they have held off because of this in case it changes back.

Ok so I did get upgraded to PE but not to J... which confuses me, as I saw quite a few people at the gate receiving their last-minute upgraded boarding passes - and noticed that most of them had "bronze" FF status! Is there a preference given to PE->J upgrades before Y->J upgrades, regardless of status? As I said, I was travelling solo, am WP, so thought the chances would be good.... anyway PE wasn't too bad on the newly refurbed A380... really nice actually. But nowhere near worth 60k points for an upgrade!! It was half empty too. And the crew were great.

Yes. You're seeking a two class upgrade wheres the PE ->J upgrade is only a one class upgrade, therefore it will be processed first.

Thanks! Is this written anywhere in their Ts & Cs? Or is this just the general consensus? Regardless, it seems odd to me that they would care - the Y->J is more points than PE->J - so they should prefer that surely? Another QF mystery I suppose...

Maybe because they can make two pax moderately happy with single class upgrades, vs just one pax extremely happy?

From that perspective, upgrading two pax (Y->W, W->J) actually yields ~10% more points - see below example for SYD-SIN

Y to J upgrade - 54500 points

Y to W upgrade - 34100 points
W to J upgrade - 27200 points

So I guess the "priority based on status" has a few disclaimers lol
Which is fine, just wish they didn't make it so secret!!!! QF should learn something from the US airlines where all the people waiting for an upgrade are listed in order so you know what the deal is. Personally, if they are really going on about "status", then a WP requesting ANY upgrade should take precedence over a bronze. That's just my 2 cents

I don't know that it's secret at all. To me it's common sense.

PE is a higher paid class of service than Y. It makes sense the higher class of service should get preference.

In a way that QF allows a "double" upgrade from Y->J, which comes from a time before PE existed is a bonus since notionally all upgrades are single class.

However that's just my view.
